At what milage do fuel injectors typically start failing
I havent looked to see whats going on yet but im hearing an intermittent high pitch tick under the hood... not sure but it sounds like its coming from the drivers side? It sounds much like a shorted out plug wire or a plug that is firing out of the car. No engine missing has been noted but this tick comes and goes with no apparent reason or prompting. Guessing a good place to start looking would be injectors? Just turned 190000 miles and wondering if injectors might start going about now?
Some 7.3L owners have had good experiences with hot torquing the injectors, or at least checking the torque values on the hold down bolts.
Sounds like a hot torque is coming in the very near future. That is a good thread full of good info. Thanks for the link.
So do injectors just quit when the fail, or is there an indicator of some type that they are going bye-bye? At only 190k maybe its something else? Truck has had regular synthetic oil changes as well as additional remote micron oil filter.
200,000 is the design life of the injector popet valve, obviously many last longer but by 200k they have worn enough to have diminished performance. i strongly recommend only using brand new NOT remanufactured Aliant Injectors, they are the OEM and nobody else makes brand new ones, even motorcraft are remanufactured. Aliant injectors are available from Riff Raff and Diesel Orings.com
Found an interesting article on the Swamps site on this, while researching another thread on a 7.3 with white smoke after warm up. This is a possible symptom of worn injectors.
Thanks guys for the links... thats 6 pages of injector gold! Three posts and I now know more about injectors than I thought I ever would. Hopefully I can get under the hood tomorrow and the thing will start ticking so I can whittle it down to what exactly it is. Thanks again for the help!
Hey guys, agreed maintenance and straight line driving I think have helped me with my original injectors at 587k+. I got the girl down right now for new injectors. All the o-rings were very elastic and not brittle. I too experienced a drop in fuel mileage.
Does anyone use blue or red thread sealant on the hold down bolts?
One needs to be careful with torquing these bolts. There are different values for bolts that are oiled and not oiled. Tension better describes the condition of the bolts as buggered threads or other physical conditions can alter the “torque” value which then does not accurately define the bolt tension.

Thanks guys,
Oh wow, thanks for the input. Every morsel of information is appreciated and of great value to me. Thanks again!
