I believe it's an E4OD trans, truck has 101k on the clock, if that matters. Sometimes revs high and then shifts hard. Last time I drove it it shifted and just revved, nothing was there. Recently on longer drives the speedo goes up and down erratically to zero or somewhere between zero and my current speed and back to my actual speed, back and forth at times. Am I having a trans computer issue or an actual trans issue or something else? I read it could possibly be a TPS issue as well (brief CEL as well at times, but not too often). Any ideas on how to nail this problem down? Any/all help is appreciated!
However, it's likely you need a new VSS in your rear axle, or your speedometer module is failing.
No codes, just got an Innova 3145 instead of deciphering the flashes, no codes, just 111. What are your thoughts on the transmission? I've read about my problem, says possibly intermediate clutch packs are failing.
You got 111 for which tests? Key On Engine Off (KOEO), Continuous Memory or Key On Engine Running (KOER)?
Since you stated you got a brief Check Engine Light (CEL) you should have a stored code(s). Have you disconnected the battery recently? That will clear the codes from CM.

That was KOEO. Haven't disconnected battery recently. Guess I need to check the CM.
There are two parts to the KOEO tests and CM display. The first are the Key On Engine Off tests. Then a separator flash, that the code reader may interpret as Code 10. That's false. After that any Stored Codes are displayed. If there are no Stored Codes then you will see 111.
You'll need to fix your speedometer issue, regardless of a code or not for the trans to shift correctly. If your coming up empty with the scanner, just start there and once that's fixed, you'll probably find the issue will be resolved anyway.
You could have a failing range sensor as well,if at the time the trans seemed to go into neutral and just revved but the speedo was reading steady. These codes should be coming up though. That is odd. However I would just go ahead and fix the VSS or the PSOM whichever the issue is and go from there. That needs to be fixed, code or no code.
I'm just getting 111 then 10, over and over so I'm guessing I have no codes. Going to replace the VSS then report back about looking at the PSOM. Thanks guys.
Replaced the VSS with a Motorcraft, speedo still bounces a lot. Guess it's a bad PSOM? Do I pull it and see if I can see anything burned up? If so, any recommendations where to send it to be repaired? Thanks
Well pulled the PSOM, no obvious signs of anything burned up. Sent it off to modulemechanics and they found a problem and fixed it, it's on it's way back to me. Hopefully fixes my issue.
If they were actually able to fix it, it should solve your problem. The speedometer is what gives all the speed information to the computer in these trucks. It's a little backwards compared to what other vehicles do.
Okay honestly what I would do, if this continues to give you trouble I would switch to a manual trans. No matter what your truck will keep going even if you speedometer breaks or you can't tell what's going on, you'll also get more like out of your tranny.
I had a similar issue, without the speedometer issue you describe. My '95 F-150 would intermittently "uncouple" when driving. The best description I can use is; as though you were driving along with a manual transmission and pushed in the clutch pedal while maintaining gas pedal...engine revs up from no load with gas applied but disconnected from transmission... after a couple seconds the transmission re-engages with a jolt as though clutch pedal released suddenly.
I chased this issue for a couple years off and on. Turned out to be a bad "neutral safety switch" (located on the driver side, outside of the transmission housing/case). About a $50 part and very easy to replace. My truck shifting issues are solved. Several dealerships could not figure out what the problem was...

That is another very common problem with these trucks. However, a bouncing speedometer will almost always cause transmission issues, and should be resolved first.
I appreciate all your input! Modulemechanics.com were unable to fix my psom and sent me a known working/repaired one. My issue is fixed, they were great to deal with, highly recommended!
