My Ford is a 1991, 7.3 with an E4OD trans. The trans shops in my area want between $60-95 to read any codes. I have a scanner that will not read these codes. The codes are specific to 1988-1991 E4OD trans. A guy said that my overdrive button would flash if any codes are stored. My lite does not flash. The trans shifts the converte into free or lockup many times after achieving road speed. When pulling a load, the locking and unlocking is not good. Any suggestion aside from spending money on a test.?? Originally, I thot the converter was bad, but the trans works very nice and no slipping. The converter just keeps locking and unlocking. Frank
Wonder if the brake lights are flashing?
When the brake lights come on, the converter unlocks.
I have learned that much about the E4OD just from reading posts here.
And there is a little trick about the light flashing codes, but I can't remember how you get it to display the codes.
Someone with auto experience will be along shortly with the answers, sorry I can't help you.
Frank,
To be perfectly honest you need to go to Autozone or your area shop and go ahead and buy you a code reader, a OBD1 tester costs about $30 and will be well worth the money spent, way too many what if's with codes to just start replacing things with out knowing what is really the problem. If you had a way of borrowing one someone could tell you the code reading.

Some time back I did in fact buy a scanner. The unit will scan all any OBD system except....Ford diesel with E4OD trans from 1988-1991. These years are different than all others. A local shop has a Snap On scanner and costs some $3500. The scanner will not get the trans codes. I recently bought a Ford manual for the E4OD trans and learned a great deal of info including all the codes. Tonite while driving around, vxcz the action seems like the converter and some of the time the engine and trans seem out of balance. My drive line has been rebuilt for a mere $310.My tires are new and balanced. I guess I could get my sweetheart to follow mw and tell if the brake lites are on and off. Frank
first of all . the control system is OBDI
in the ford world it is known as EEC IV the system on your vehicle is not a unique stand alone system for diesel only
if you have a code reader that will plug into the connector it will scan any ford from 1984 to 1995 with EEC IV gas or diesel
you must also hold the throttle at wide open before and during the test or you will recieve an eroneous fipl code
only 1992 and later diesels had the ability to flash the overdrive cancel light when a code is stored
if your truck has the original processor it cannot flash the o/d light
as far as the torque converter locking and unlocking the brake switch can cause it
then most likely it is the fipl sensor with a flat spot in the circuit board causing the tcc to hunt
but a code read is necessary first
will your scanner plug into both connectors on the truck it will be on the left fender apron
