Trans problem

Transmission problem just developed. The trans won't downshift. First is not working at all. I have to put the shifter in second to take off. No o/d light flashing . I serviced the transmission about two weeks ago. I am a forklift mechanic, but not a transmission mechanic. Can somone help
with info on pulling codes or some things to check? Thanks

Try doing the shifting by manual means first then, second then, third.

Your saying the trans has no first in drive...... does it engage in a higher gear.

First check would be electrical connectors...... MLPS (manual lever postion sensor) on trans drivers side.

Then the main connector.....
Check all the trans electrical connections especially the one on the right side with the tin cover, remove the tin heat shield, remove the solenoid connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling up on the wire harness. To install push down until a click is heard. Always reinstall the tin heat shield.

Your looking for corroded, bent or missing pins and water etc.......

How is the gear selector cable to the trans.....

Have shifted manually. First does not engage in any position. Cable appears to be ok. I'll check the harness connections tomorrow. Could there still be codes present even with no o/d light flashing? Thanks for your help.

Hard faults go away when you fix them. The memory codes ( "soft faults' ) can be erased by disconnecting the battery, using a scan tool and "clearing memory codes", or they will go away on there own after a certain number ( 40 or 80 depend on the model year ) of drive cycles, assuming that the intermittent running problem does not reoccur.

Summary of codes types.
Hard faults - problem present at the time the Key On Engine Off
( KOEO ) SelfTest is run.
Continuous Memory codes - occured while the vehicle was operating and may stll be there. If it is still there you may have the same code in both areas.
Engine Running Codes ( Key On Engine Running, KOER ) occur during the KOER Self Test. They will disappear when fixed.

Go to an Azone and get the codes read........ if there are any. Is the TCIL light dim per chance.......

With no electrics, you will have 4th gear in "D", reverse in "R", and second gear with the shift selector in "2". Do you have any automatic function at all?

cycle the o/d cancel button if it does not light you have a power problem no electricity to the transmission control module aka pcm , there is a relay on the left fender apron for the pcm there is also one for the trailerlamps you can swap them to see if that is the problem and if the relay is laying on the fender it is probably full of water and corrosion / the E4OD when there is no power starts in 4th gear in the drive position and starts in 2nd in either manual 2 or manual 1 , it cannot have 1 st gear when electrically dead

Thanks for all the help. I unplugged the solenoid pack on the right side of the trans. The plug was broken, had water and oil in it and a pin stuck in the plug. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced the solenoid pack and connector. Shifts like new. Thanks again!!!
