On my 1996 F350 Auto Trans the #17 10amp fuse blows when I downshift from Drive to 2. Most noticeable when fuse blows is no Tach, no Battery, no Temp, no Oil on gauge cluster.
Any ideas or fixes??
The #17 10 amp fuse is listed as;
.Diesel indicators
.Electronic Transmission
.Gauges
.Tachometer
.Warning buzzer/chime module
.Warning indicators
My guess is that one or more of the wires from the shift handle have worn through the insulation near the end of the shift handle, inside the steering column. When you move the shifter it shorts one of those wires to ground and blows the fuse. You should be able to see the problem when you remove the plastic cover from the column.

Mark, I just pulled the steering column covers and ignition switch. The loom looks like new (only 117k on the truck) and I followed it back to the plug, everything looks good.
Everything is fine in drive, just when i downshift to 2. I pull a fifth wheel, sometimes I will need to downshift when pulling hills.
That's so bizarre.If the fuse is only blowing when you move the shift selector,your going to have to slit the black sleeve covering up the individual wires to inspect and repair/re-coat/wrap bare wires inside.
They do sell replacement harness for this too if you rather but it's got to be in there.I mean what are the odds of you moving the shift lever at the same time every time to blow the fuse and have it unrelated right?
