i've lately been looking for a cheap(ish) radio for my '71 F100, but i didn't really want to get an old radio (for obvious reasons) nor did i want to pay over $150 for a retro styled modern radio.
I was hoping i could buy a standard size modern radio for about $60 or so used off ebay or something and just wire it in myself, just not sure the wiring all matches, would i have to get new/more speakers?... any knowledge on this?
I was looking for something myself. I saw a used radio on ebay yesterday for 50 bucks but haven't jumped on it yet. I was going to buy a dual cone stereo speaker that is one speaker for an in dash Original mount.
Yeah that's probably what I was going to end up doing, I don't even know if my current speakers work. if so they probably don't sound that great for today's standards.
There are a few different ways to do a newer radio. One is to use an install kit for an old Volvo, bend in the mount tabs in your dash, and with the adapter upside down you can install any modern single DIN radio, as detailed here.
You can also just leave the stock radio in the hole in the dash, and hide a new one in the glove box, hanging under the dash, or under the seat.
There is also the option of the sound headliner from LMC, but there's been mixed reviews on that.
For speakers, the stock one in the dash is just a single, that's all that was ever factory installed. Most trucks have been modified at some point in their life to have more speakers, but that varies a lot truck to truck. Your best option would be to work with what the truck already has, if it needs door speakers then add them in the panels rather than the door shells, and if you need more then custom boxes mounted on the upper seatbelt mounts are a good option.
Yeah, i thought about hiding it in the glove box since i don't have the storage box that slides in it, plus wiring wouldn't have to be extended or hidden.
I would love to put it under the dash as well other than the fact that my truck has the factory under-dash A/C unit (which does still work btw) and I don't really want to chunk it or drill into it.
I also do have a radio laying around that was given to me, it only half works but its good enough for now, and for just testing.
I have SEEN a couple in real life. I haven't heard them. There's opportunity to be had to make them more pleasing to the eye, that's for sure.
hahaha, especially since my truck in particular has no headliner and is still green its a blue truck now.
I think im just gonna do that volvo mount mod thing after all. just have to wait to buy one and get the harness i bought for my radio. couldn't actually find the one they had in that forum (the ones they sell now just have tabs instead of screw holes) so i found this, think it'd work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAR-STEREO-S...sAAMXQBg5RpoRC

I don't have it in me to fold the radio tabs backwards...
