Sensor issue or ?

Hello: I have a 2001 F250 7.3 170k miles and no issues last six years. Have been towing 6k lb boat. After running about 15 minutes, transmission goes into "limp" mode and takes about 2k rpm to get going, max about 15 mph. Runs and shifts as expected until "limp" mode. No warning lights or indicators on dash. Searching resulted in finding the culprit may be the VSS/ABS rear sensor, particularly as I have been dunking it in water launching boat. If you have other other thoughts, I would appreciate knowing them! Thank you for your help.

Easiest way would be to remove the sensor and clean it. Any issues with the speedo acting up?

Thank you for the reply CSI. During the first 15 min or so, there are no issues and when the "transmission "lims" I have been more focused on the tach. I did not notice any speedometer issues but wasn't looking. Is VSS to fail only at normal op temps?

It can fail at anytime and be just problematic. You can pull it and clean it, might work...

You need to get the codes read. It would be very unusual for that to happen without setting one or more codes. The places that read codes free can't read the codes you need. A good independent shop or a Ford dealer are what you need.

John. Where are you located at? There may be someone here that could help you reading codes with AutoEnginuity. You could invest in your truck and purchase AE and put it on a laptop and it could help you find the issue.

Thank you Fordpride, I updated the location as well. The OD light wasn't flashing nor were any other (eg CEL) dashboard indicators. Should there have been codes with a slipping transmission?
