one reason these engines are having problems,is most likely that folks try to change the plugs with the engine NOT being allowed to cool off COMPLETELY. both the engine and the replacement plugs should be the same temperature for installation and only then can they be properly torqued. the problem may not show on the first time in,but the poor guy who pulls out the plugs on the next replacement will most likely be the recipient of pulled threads,or the possibility of plug blow out. an overnight cool down is the only safe way to approach any engine's tune up. yes, ford should have to make these right, for their part in ill-engineering the heads,but the fault also lies in improper service techniques. in our shop ALL cars cool off overnight to prevent any problems with this .
48,000 miles on my 1999 without any problems, sparkplugs or otherwise. Thus, I hesitate to check the torque on the plugs even though it wouldn't be that big-a-deal, except for getting a socket on those back ones.
The threads in the oe heads are only threaded 1/2 the depth the replacement heads are suposed to be threaded all the way at least that was the redesigned head from JASPER ENGINES.
