I have a 99 Expedition with the 4.6. i recently had a buddy replace the spark plugs. Yesterday the wife is driving the car and it suddenly begins to run very rough and become very loud. she gets it over to a car shop and the mechanic says that the ford motors were notorius for blowing spark plugs. In our case the spark plug wasn't threaded all the way in and basically backed out. Is it common for this engine to blow spark plugs out of their seat?
Yes, and it is almost always due to improper torquing of the new plugs. If it only backed out you are extremely lucky, usually they spit out with the threads intact. The definition of common will be argued but it is a very well known problem with all the 2V modulars.
Not always though from improper torqueing. My buddy at the track was switching his plugs, he had dirt or something on the threads. They are realy very fragile, I cant believe they didnt recall for this issue.
He was done for the day, we pulled both heads, drilled and replaced all the threads with a kit N.A.P.A.sells. We did all so we wouldnt have to do it again.

Ask the guy who swapped the plugs what Ft Lbs he torqued the plugs to. Supposed to be between 7 -15 ft lbs. I did mine right at 12 when the heads were cold - which is important. Triple checked each plug out of paranoia due to the amount of extensions required to actually tighten the plugs. I never "calibrated" for the extra extensions - I just went slow and made sure the wrench clicked every time. In addition, I used A LOT of anti-seize as well. The general concensus was to go liberal on that so I did and made sure all the plug threads had a nice coating. Last but not least, use only direct replacement Motorcraft plugs. I have almost 3k since I did the change with 0 problems (knock on wood). Follow that and you will be golden.
Anybody tried the NAPA Sparkplug Rethreading Kit to fix a blown out plug?? It looks like a longer sparkplug with a coil type insert and a new coil boot for like $70.00. If it works that seems a better price than the other kits I've seen(time-sert,calvan etc).
Where did you purchase the CalVan kit?? I started to order one online at DenLors Tools and when I went to checkout my computer said something about the sites security being questionable, so I did not put any credit card info in there. The price from them is $250.75.
I bought mine from Calvav kit from a local tool warehouse, K tools in Wixom Mi. I paid around $250 also for mine. The kit comes with a dvd. so watch that first.

My CalVan kit showed up the end of last week, now I'm waiting for my mechanic to work on the truck--he's good, just does things at his own pace though. Anyhow I ended up calling and ordering it from DenLors tools, price was $250.75 and that included shipping--which only took two days.
How is that? I think they fixed the plug blow out problem on 05's with the 3 valve heads
Yes they fixed it, so well that the plugs would stick in the head when you tried to remove them. I think by mid '05 or maybe '06 they got that problem under control.
Yah, I have heard about the plugs that get stuck or break off, I see there are tools available for this. I have not had any come in yet, guess I will have to get the stuff to fix them next. Anyone have any advice on what tool kit is the best and what tricks can make it easier?

Is it a 3v / 2v thing or are 05 heads different than 04 3v heads ? I've noticed a few 04s with 3v engines in trucks and was wondering if they still blew out plugs.
