I have a 2003 F250 5.4l that I recently purchased with 65,000 miles on it. Ive been reading about all the spark plug issues. That being said, from my understanding:
04-08 has the issues with the plugs breaking off.
02 and earlier had the issues with only 4 threads
Ive read that in 03 they fixed the thread issues
Now although my truck is an 03 I checked my MFD and it is 11/02
So what I'm getting at is, do I need to worry about blowing out a spark plug like in the 02 and earlier years. Also should i go ahead and change my spark plugs to be safe at my given mileage?
On the Super Duty trucks, the spark plug breaking issue started in '05, with the introduction of the 3V engine. The '04 Super Duty still had the 2V engine.
For yours, just follow the recommended procedure when you change your spark plugs and relax. You'll be OK.
I changed the plugs in my '03 at 105,000 miles. Other than the expected "getting to them" issue on the rear passenger side, I had no trouble getting any of the plugs out, or back in. It all went smooth. I did not have to remove the fuel rail, but I did loosen it and move it out of the way on a few of the plugs. Just be careful when loosening the plugs and they should come right out.
By the way, I sold the truck with 125,000 miles, and the guy who bought it is still pulling his 29' travel trailer with it. That's been over 2 years ago. Every time I see him he says "Man, I love that truck". It still runs like a new truck and has never been in the shop for anything.
