I have a 2002 Econoline Van with the V10. I ran the stock plugs 65,000 miles and never had a problem. Changed them and no I have 112,000 miles on the vehicle and its missing. I found which plug was missing and replaced the plug and the thing ran fine, now its missing again a little and I am wondering if I should have just replaced the whole lot of them. These plugs are usually not a problem. I did do a fair bit of hard towing last year with these plugs, but they look good when removed and none of them are loose.
My question is. Has anyone found a superior plug for the V10. I have stuck with the motorcraft because of blow out issues. But was wondering if there is a better spark plug for this engine that would be superior.
Thanks
Andrew.
I would replace all the plugs again, as you have 47k on them, it wouldn't hurt to change them. Also think about replacing the rubber boots as preventive maintenance.
IMHO...go with the Motorcraft AGSF22WM platinum plugs. But this time...make sure to replace the boots at the same time.
What you could be experiencing is the boot causing the miss...and may not actually be the plugs. However...it is just easier to replace them all. Then you should be good for another 99,000 miles...
A quick way to see if the boots or COP are arching to the block is to run the engine in a VERY dark place. Inspect each plug. The there are cracks in the boot, you'll see those little lightning bolts clear as day. Any arching and sparking will seriously degrade combustion efficiency.
OH don't screw around...lick your finder and stick it up under that COP.... your hand will be touching metal (hot metal) and any jolt will be just in your finger and hand.....
Please do NOT do this ignorant test... I am only being a rude and sarcastic grumpy old man
I would hate for any fellow Ford owner to burn his knuckles trying to "see" with his finger tips the neat Saint Elmo's fire that accompanies a groady COP to Spark plug boot
I also do not recommend using a extend-able inspection mirror, as most of them are all metal designs... 20,000 to 60,000 volts is enough to make you react and hurt your self
