an easy one

Bill, I am fairly new but am already over all the hiboy, lowboy, nobody stuff. I am restoring a 1977 F-250 and just bought a crate 351M as that was what was in it so trying to keep true to the breed. My question is in 1977 were they still painting the engines Ford blue or were they black? I have a Ranger XLT model. Thx.

Let's see how it goes with what was standard, regarding manual vs. auto and the associated transfer cases. Good point!

I forgot that the 460 swap is easier when you start with a 351M or 400, so I will edit that note in there.

It sounds like I'm misusing the term standard cab, and would like to see more replies about that. I'm thinking now I should've said regular cab, and will change it if that is confirmed.

I know next to nothing about seat belt retractors. Anybody?

You also make a good point about 77.5-79 trucks, but I will not mention the point because this topic is restricted to 67-77.5 Highboys...if I started making comparisons outside of that, who knows where I'd end up...probably posting about some early Datsun or something

77.5-79's are definitely great trucks, and better in many ways. I was always partial to the '79 F-350 4x4. Cheers.
They were blue. What shade of blue, I do not know.

I prefer non-swiss cheese frame rails myself. Everything else is easy to swap and ad to the older ones.

QUOTE=NumberDummy;9393670]Custom Cab does belong there.

1961/72: There were Standard and Custom Cabs, Rangers (1965/72) and Ranger XLT's (1970/72).

Standard Cabs were basic trucks, came without stainless steel windshield revel mouldings, have bare bones interiors, all had painted grilles thru 1969...and etc etc etc.

I could type more inre to Standard Cabs, but I haven't the time...see the P/M I sent you.

Shoulder harnesses were first offered as an option in 1968, became mandatory mid-model year 1977.

Speaking of correct Ford terminology = There is no such thing as a 1977.5. The last 1977 F250 4WD 'High Boy' was assembled before serial numbe Y20,001.

Y20,001 occured mid-model year 1977 (I believe that was February).
My 1977 ford f 250 has 351M, NP 435 , NP 205 TC divorced, LP DANA 60 rear and 44 front, open knuckle, gas tank in cab.... With a VIN # Y228**. Well above Y20,001.

There is at least one other thread dealing with the same thing - I will try to dig it up.

Edit:

Here it is.

Ford Highboy Trim Levels Question

Hello sir,
my name is Cade. I greatly enjoyed your post. Very excellent and informative well done. The only thing I didn't seem and can't seem to find on the internet is about highboy trim levels. I've heard of the terms custom, ranger, ranger xlt, camper special and more. I know that the higher trim levels offer features such as dual tanks, better upholstery etc. I have two questions.

My first question is: What are the specific trim levels and their names for the Ford Highboy 67'-77.5' and what did each trim level specifically offer?

Also, I've seen ford highboys on google images or for sale that say camper special edition. They are 4x4 f-250's and they have a camper special logo on the side. They also have that useful storage compartment on the bottom front right side of the bed. I couldn't find any information on wether these were true highboys. I didn't know if maybe the owners put a camper special bed and the logo onto a highboy. Or I didn't know if this was another trim level maybe a ranger xlt with camper features and they called it a camper special edition.

So my second question is: Are there true highboy camper special editions? And if so, what are camper special editions? What specifically do they have to offer?

Thank you sir.

Question Highboy? Yay or Nay?

Hey Blue Oval Community, I have a 77' F250 that was built in July of 77'; which according to this thread exceeds the last production month of Highboy's (Febraury) by 5 months. My only argument is that my truck has a lot of similar characteristics on a high boy such as having a 351M, a divorced transfer case, power steering, 4X4 set up with a DANA 60 rear and a DANA 44 front, and rear drum brakes with front disc brakes. The only counter argument I have again my claim is that the gas tank is separate from the cab and I haven't measured the frame yet. Any input to my dilemma would be very appreciate, thanks!

Looks like a Dentside Highboy to me... but there are lots of others on this forum who are way more expert on the fine points of Highboy or not. Mine is a '68 so no problem there with ID... Your truck looks like a good one, and mostly straight & complete. Keep the rubber side down..

The pics don't show a lot but I would says that is not a highboy based on the front spring pack and integral power steering box. I would say someone swapped in the divorced transfer case if thats whats in it. In my opinion you are better off not having a high boy because then you have a normal width rear frame, better power steering, gas tank out of the cab, high pinion front axle, the list goes on.

^^^Lowboy there Mike77^^^

The indicators:

Internal locking front hubs
Front spring hangers. Highboys were more integrated into the frame
Upper rear shock hangers on the frame.
3" blocks in rear (highboys are close to 4")
Steering arm
front spring pack
frame appears to widen midway, highboys is straight

If you look at the front frame cross member, I bet yours is angled. Highboys are straight.

Here are some more pictures. I'm not too familiar with auto terminology and components; I'm fairly new. Pictures of the rear leaf springs, front cross member, front axle knuckles, and transfer case. This is most likely a low boy front the commentary I've been receiving. The transfer case is still the only think that puzzles me. Getting a picture of the transfer case connecting to the transmission was very difficult because of the cross member. Let me know! Thanks!

That doesn't look like a divorced transfer case to me. Divorced would mean there is a driveshaft in between the transmission and transfer case.
