I can't say enough good about Scouting, and an Eagle award is a big plus on your application. Unfortunately, 16 is a little late to be getting started. But just being involved with the organization is a good thing, and Explorers are geared toward the older boys. And girls. It is co-ed.

I took Coast Guard Auxiliary classes and Marina Del Rey, but that has been over twenty years ago.

Anthony, if you have not done it already, take a CPR class and find out what it takes to become an instructor. It would be a good credential and an interesting experience. Then go on to take EMT classes. Also look into doing search and rescue work for your local sheriff's department. Often they have civilian teams and usually offer training.

All this stuff that I have mentioned would go a long way toward convincing the Coast Guard that you are exactly the kind of guy that they want in the service and will count heavily in proving you can be a leader and will help you make rank.

Every branch of the military services have massive amounts of drudge work. If you get all this training behind you before you go in, you will be doing more of the interesting work and less scraping and painting. You have time to do a lot of it before you go in.

I'm glad you know what you want to do. The earlier in life you get focused on your career goals the higher your chances of rising to the top of your field.

Do any of you know anythin' about Antique Singer Foot Treadle Sewing Machines...?
I just know they started making 'em in 1851, the one I have is maybe early 1910s...
I don't have a picture of it, yet...(it is Victorina, and is very ornate, many things from that era were)
Bruce, The advice you have given me is much appreciated, I will refer back to these posts.

Maybe you mean Victorian?

Yes, Anthony, I do know about them. I learned to sew on one when I was much younger than you are currently.

I have one in our guest room, albeit covered with "other stuff", but it is not there for its looks alone.

There's not much chance that the Coast Guard will still be using them, however....

We got it 'cause I like antiques...
Yes, that is what I meant.
(It's hard to type in here, it's very dark over in my lonesome corner...)
Pop, you know so much about them, could you tell me what era it is...?
I will see if I can find a Model Number, that helps...
No, I do not sew...

Hi Anthony, we collect Singer Featherweight 221's. Wikipedia is a good learning tool.

This one is supposedly a 1905, and the treadle/cabinet looks just like yours.
Google Image Result for http://crazydaisysews.com/1905treadle.jpg

Here's a site on Singer ID: ID Singer Machines

Wikipedia is an excellent source of information. Don't discount it outright, but don't accept it as a final source either. It is written by all of us, just like FTE, and just like FTE there is mostly good info with a portion of not so good info.

People who scoff at Wiki in toto, usually found something that differed with their own biased opinions.
