recently bought a '66 F-100 that had sat for 9 years. Pulled the motor replaced rear main seal and oil galley plugs. Took a month to figure out the wiring along wth 100 other problems the truck had. Anyway I've got it running pretty good but, it is very loud at the starter when I start it. Some on told me the starter may need to be spaced away from the fly wheel alittle bit, maybe a washer or two should do the trick. Does this sound like a solution or is the problem with the fly wheel it self. By the way the engine and tranny are not original to the truck. Thanks for any help you can share!
.
sounds like you got the starter a little close. i would pull it out and grab the gear of the start and pull it out. measure how long the throw is and make a measurement of the mounting spot and decide on your washers from there. you will definatly hurt your flywheel if you keep it that way and thats either an engine pull or a tranny pull. good luck.

Welcome to FTE
By the way, what is the swapped engine and transmission? It's impossible to answer a question like this without this info.
Using washers on the starter is not the answer, could cause more harm than good.
If the teeth on the flywheel's ring gear are stripped, and the starter drive lands on that portion of the flywheel, the starter will screech like a spavined owl.
Some engines use a spacer plate between the engine and the bellhousing. If it's missing, that's the answer right there.
When I bought my 66 I had the same problem. So I bought a new starter and went to install it and couldn't get it bolted up right! So after making she they were both the same, I saw the old one had been ground down by the ring gear on the flywheel....so I took my grinder and ground down the new one. And it works like a charm!!! So you might check that out.....or it could be like ND said.
Thanks guys for the quick responses. The truck was originally a 6cyl. it now has a 352 fe with a c-4 tranny. I had the starter off when I pulled the engine for the main seal and oil galley plugs. There definitly does not have a spacer of any kind. If it should where can I get my hands on one?The fly wheel is a little chewed up but, not missing any teeth. It has a 3 speed b & m ratchet shifter if that makes any difference.
