Starter Question

I have a 57 F100 with a 292 I got a quick question about the starter I think I know the anwser but I have to ask. The starter is mounted already and it seems that the starter drive is already engaged on the fly wheel. I think it has lock pins that keep it place until it reaches a certain speed is this right?? The reason I ask is when I try rotating the engine with a ratchet on the damper it's hard to turn over and I here a clicking noise coming from the starter I what to make sure before I apply power to the starter
Thanks

Starter Question

Hi Mike,

According to my shop manual............

"The starter drive used on the standard and Auto-lite starters is the "Folo-thru" type".

"CAUTION:
The "Folo-thru" drive has a lock pin which holds the pinion from rotating when it is in the extended position. Once the pin has dropped into place, it will not disengage unless the starter is mounted on the truck and the engine speed reaches 310-390 rpm. It cannot be forced out of position by hand".

I hope this helps.

Starter Question

Thanks Kenny
That's what I thought also but I wanted to make sure. I just never seen one that works that way, So that means it's always in the locked position until the engine is started then it disengages itself unlike the newer starters where once the key is removed from the start position the start drive disengages.

Mike :-)
