I have a 78' Ford (300 L6) Automatic c6 tranny that i purchased this past year. It runs like a champ, my only problem is I have gone through 3 starters already. I have a feeling the previous owner may have put in the wrong size/model fly wheel maybe? From what it looks like the bendix is getting eaten up. The teeth on the fly wheel look fine and in tact. Any ideas?
Welcome to FTE. Are you sure you are getting the correct starter in the 1st place" Are you buying the cheapest starter available? Are you sure you do not have to shim that starter?
Can you get any #'s off the flywheel (drop the lower insp plate) and make sure you have the correct one?
Have you turned it over by hand and insp ALL of the flywheel teeth?
Are you sure it's disengaging after it starts? Rebuilt Nose-Cone style starters usually end up with the Bendix staying out just a hair, enough that they don't quite come out of the flywheel teeth, and it spins all the time. If it's dragging and spinning, you can start by adding a washer on the mount bolts under the case and see if that moves it back far enough. If it does, you can add that much shim in front of the Bendix to hold it back that much (recommended), or leave the washers where they are and drive it (seen it done, probably fine too).
I triple or quadruple that the bendix is not fully disengaging from the flywheel and the starter needs spaced out. I learned this the hard way with some aftermarket starters after looking at a truly stock one. You could easily see the bendix stuck out too far.
Generally, Ford starters require zero (0) shims. There are two different starters for your I6. One has a shorter nose than the other...in other words, one starter is for a stick, another is for an auto trans.
Next trip to the parts store ask them to bring out both....if they have 'em. They'll probably tell you they're both the same.....NOT!!

This.
Also check if that spacer plate is between the engine and transmission.
