I read somewhere that guys are updating their tranny pan to an '08 model? Anyone have an idea why and mayb a pic of what it looks like?

I replaced my diff cover with an '08 aluminum model on my last fluid change....very ice and cost effective.

ANY IDEAS?

From what I've heard the 08 pans are larger to hold more fluid and they have a real filter in them, not just a screen.

This is the one I have.

YourCovers.com Ford TorqShift Deep Transmission Pan

Got it about 50,000 miles ago. Holds 4.5 quarts more then the stock pan. Very pleased with product quality, fit and hardware. It also has a place to mount a temp sensor. PML will drill and tap temp sensor port or you can do it yourself.

That is very nice DSMMH!

I have always wanted to upgrade pan size but could not see paying 400.00 for a MAG-Hytec pan......NOW I DON'T HAVE TO!

The internal filter is an added nicety. I currently do not have an internal filter only the spin on external........did you install the internal filter model?

If so, did you maintain the additional filtration of the spin on?

Does anyone hae the part number to the OEM pan.....like to take a look at it as well?

Thanks for the help!

Ford changed their trans pan mid-year '08. I don't think it holds more, but it now has an internal pickup filter instead of just a screen. At the same time Ford did this, they changed the service interval from 30k to 60k miles. The capacity did not change. Still 17.5 qts.

So does the internal filter add 100% to the life of the fluid? Or did Ford just rethink their service requirements?

Personally I am happy to never have to drop the pan to service a filter, and don't plan to change mine.

Are you saying the new pan doesn't have a drain plug??

No, I'm saying it has an internal filter instead of the really easily changed external filter. And it didn't cost me any extra $$$. Just don't see the point.

HMMMMMMMM........I thought it held more fluid. If that is the case, then really why change it?

The only reason I can see is to extend the service interval from 30 to 60k. At $200 per service pop you could justify that, but I would rather just change the fluid.

So in reality if I went with the new pan and the new style internal filter, I would have two filters to worry about but be able to go 60k before fluid changes?

I'm saying that Ford increased the interval to 60k, and the only apparent change to the tranny was the filter. It would be your own judgement call on when you should change the fluid. You could also argue that you could leave it just the way it is and go with a 60k interval. I tend to think that they learned from experience that they were safe, WRT warranties, to extend the interval.

I don't know what to make of it all to tell you the truth.

Most of us are past the point of transmission warranty, but it should be said anyway, that changing to the new filter will not change your service obligation. If you have an extended ESP, don't bother doing this. You will just void your tranny warranty.

I got a Mag-hytec for mine. It holds 8.3 more over stock and see a 20 deg difference in temp. 160 unloaded and about between 180 -190 towing. Saw between 195-200 up an 8% grade with my foot in it and about 2800 rpm.

The main issue is that the external filter is a bypass filter - only a percentage of the flow is filtered. An internal filter will filter it all (at least as it was explained to me).
