Servicing my trans today and changing pan to a 4WD pan with drain plug. I read somewhere that the filter on the E40D has a tendency to slip down and into pan causing tranny do weird things. Apparently this enough to have a company make clips that secures filter in position so that it does not slip down into pan.
Any of you experience your trans filter slipping down into pan? Just wondering if this is a needed mod or not.
BTW.....4WD pan has small raised nubs at bottom of pan to hold filter up
It would only happen if the transmission is low on ATF (even a little low), but it does happen, the truck will stall when backing up. I fabbed my own clip from some aluminum I had, check out this thread, you'll find some pictures of it there: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post13059337
What you should really consider is a shift kit, it's usually a less than $100 mod that will really enhance the transmission response, and an auxiliar cooler would be amazing too.

X2 on Encho's suggestions. The filter clip he fabbed is pure genius!
It's a design flaw, not an installation problem. Why are there two clips in the kit? I have no idea, good measure maybe? my setup works just fine as others have pointed out. Just keep in mind that it's a good mod with no downsides. Anyway keep the ATF lvl at check and you'll have a happy trans.
