Take the air cleaner lid completely off, which will let you see the turbo intake impeller.

Look for bent fins.
Now try to wobble it around, a very little play is is normal, nothing excessive or not enough to make contact with the turbo housing.
Now give it a spin with your fingers, it should rotate easily.
Thanks is there a prefered place to buy one if its bad can you pick one up for less than a grand

Like everyone has been saying, i say it again too. No starting fluid ever, it will blow that IDI sky high...if your GPs are working fine then remove the air filter that might be clogging it causing too much restriction. I would personally recommend AT least 950cca on your two batteries, two are required because its a big engine, big starter, big alt, ect ect. If you want to have batteries you can trust in a bad situation in the cold, make sure that they have 1000 cca to 1200 cca. I personally have two motorcraft 950 cca in my '84 6.9l. Either way. If it was producing a massive amount of black smoke and you say you were getting fuel out of the injector leaking onto the outside of the engine, i would recommend checking to see if you have a dead injector that is stuck open and just dumping fuel into the cylinder.

If you are looking to get a new turbo, you can save a little money by getting yours rebuilt. It can save you a little money if your on a budget to fix your truck. Welcome to the IDI community btw.

Thanks for the help. I have not and will not use starting fluid on it. I can get it started now it just don't run well. I know nothing other than the advice I have been getting on this forum. My next plan is to check the turbo for play or rubbing on the housing. this truck has 125k miles on it. If that appears to be ok then I'm ordering new injectors and return lines from Pensicola diesel. I don't want to spend alot on this truck all at once but I don't need it so its ok if it sits as I have time and money to mess with it.
I appreciate all the help this is my first diesel.

No problem. I am happy to help. If the truck has that few miles on it, well. I would love to have it lol, that truck isnt even broken in yet being an IDI. Like ppl have said, once you learn what little you need to know about caring for the 6.9l or the 7.3l IDI, they are a dream to drive...and last FOREVER. My personal story, i grew up in a 1986 F-250 6.9l 2wd. This truck barely runs anymore because of serious engine problems due to it being lent to someone and he blew a few things and caught the turbo on fire...this truck has 475,000 miles on it and i started it 3 days ago with 2 fresh batteries, a solenoid and some fuel in the tank. granted she coughed oil all over...these trucks, once they are fixed and running smooth, are perfect for me lol. They do all the pulling I need. I would make sure you have OEM parts, as they are the best fit and the OEM knows whats best for these vehicles.

Hey Kentwa... Is that Kent, Washington? I'm in Issaquah!

I'm not a diesel mechanic, but have done all my own work for 10 years on my vehicles, 3 now on my beloved IDI.

I put a turbo IP into my N/A truck, and while it was being over-fueled, it didn't drive like crap. Sure, lots of black smoke, but no drivability issues. I turned down the fuel since then and she's happy.
My point is this- If your turbo is not functioning properly, why would it run like crap? Wouldn't it just run like an N/A truck for the most part? I mean, unless the turbo was totally siezed, in that case I can see it being practically no intake or exhaust flow.

One of the cheapest and best peices of advice I've heard for a truck you didn't "raise" yourself is to fill the fuel filter with diesel kleen, run the truck for 30 seconds, then shut it off and go to bed. Start it up tomorrow and let the smoke blow out. It will do a good job of dislodging any junk in the IP and injectors, at least it's a start.

And if your IP is tired, replacing injectors will NOT HELP, will only make your IP struggle and die quickly. I personally did that, new injectors to replace tired ones, and my IP blew out the next year, leaking all over the place.
(the worst part is that I got 16mpgs with tired injectors and IP and I still don't have that back yet with new stuff)

Where are the timing marks for IP? (not that I can direct you without a timing device but maybe whoever gave you the truck just threw an IP on and didn't align the marks at all)

Hope this helps!
-Joshua

Thanks guys well I think for now I will check the turbo first. I have a little fear of the IP cause I'm not sure how to do the timeing. I did notice that you could get IP, injectors and return lines for about $600 from Pensecola diesel. What I do know is the IP has never been replaced. And not all but some of the injectors have been replaced at some point. I do think its a good idea to change the IP I just have been avoiding the truth ha ha ha

Another Slick lover!!

I also learned how to wrench on my '65 352, and the IDI is the only other engine I will ever own!

Fear not on the IP install. It's a cake walk really. When you install it, line up the timing marks on the IP and the IP housing. That will get you started. Then you can either bring it to a diesel shop and have them time it, or do a lot of reading here and buy some tools to do it yourself. I'm gonna bring it someone myself...and slowly buy the tools as time goes by. Heck, mine has been lined up on the timing marks for 2 years now without issues.

If I were you, I'd invest in 8 brand new Injectors, a new Injection pump, and a Return line kit. That will get you going for sure. Definetly a hit for the wallet, but it's the most reliable way to rule out issues...plus you'll need them anyways.
Here's where I get my parts: http://www.mwfi.com/dieselPage/ford_69.htm

Major Breakthrough on my problem

Before spending the money injectors and I/P I wanted to check the Turbo to make sure it was still good. I'm ashamed to tell on my self but Im not the one who maintained this truck. An air filter got sucked down the tubing and stopped at the turbo and was blocking air to the turbo. I cleaned the tube out checked the turbo ( its good ) and reassembled.
The Truck started and now runs great unbelievable but I'm very happy
