Little different starting problem

OK my starting problem is different from ones i have read on here, but i do think i know what my problem is, but thought i would post and ask to make sure.
been very cold for tennessee. 10 to 30 degrees lately, i plug the truck in and in the morning hit the glow pulgs 2 or 3 times then try to start it. it starts first time every time and then runs for 5-10 seconds then stalls and then will not start for nothing. i have resorted to a little ether but don't like doing that.
i think i have a fuel line leak???
i climbed under it in the driveway, no garage, in 13 degree temp at dusk, saw a fuel line to the fuel pump that didn't look good, so i cut a little off and reconnected. tried it the next morning and same thing run for 5 seconds then stall. same thing that afternoon coming home from work.
replaced the battery too, they needed replaced.
i think i have a fuel line leak, it has enough fuel to start and run but then stalls and then won't start because it has flooded????
I have an appointment to take the truck to a semi shop where the owner used to own a idi diesel and knows them quite well, he is willing to try to track down my problem.
any other thoughts or ideas???
I have been SO impressed with the fact that it always has fired up and ran for a couple seconds. can't wait till this is fixed so it starts and runs better.
ALSO i have bench seats and want to switch to buckets any advice on what i should get or avoid>>>????\
thanks

pull the filter off when it cuts off. if its sucking air below the filter housing the filter won't be completely full. i have also seem it suck air around the fuel heater and the shrater valve on the filter housing.

also how much fuel is in the tanks because the plastic pickup likes to break up and stall the motor at 1/4 tank also you cant flood a diesel

the fuel has to be pressurized to 1500 psi to be delivered out of the injectors so no fuel no pressure= the motor will just spin

Sounds like the typical loss of fuel system prime.
You've got air intrusion and the fuel drains back to the tank while the truck sits for a while.
Check your return lines, they're the rubber hoses running between each injector, the plastic caps on the injectors will leak if they're old and if you disturb them.
The biggest mistake people make is wiggling their plastic caps, once you wiggle them the o-ring loses its seal and will never seal up again....so don't touch them!
The kits are available online, but check your local fuel injection shop.
I did, and found an excellent resource who even stocks 6.9/7.3 IDI parts because there are so many IDI's running around our area that local businesses refuse to upgrade to newer piece of junk trucks.
Check out this link for the Injector Install Kit. That's what you'll need to buy if you've got fuel leaks.

interesting.. mine was doing close to the same thing during the cold winter season.. I live in TN too. it would start for about 5-10 seconds then as I would attempt to give it more fuel from the pedal it would just stall... I would then wait about 2-5 minutes, and it would eventually start for good after cranking for 10-20 seconds.

after it warmed up a little(the weather) and i started using the block heater is starts up very well. I also discovered that 1 glow plug wasn't hooked up at all and another one needed repaired. so I got those 2 taken care of and it starts up just fine now....

but this upcoming winter I will probably need to buy one of these "injector install kits" .. could someone possibly give me a link on what kind of kit to buy? and can I get/order one of these at a local parts store?

This is the kit I always buy: 7.3 L Ford Diesel Fuel Injectors Fuel Pumps Accessories

But this is what I'll be purchasing next week: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rev-1-0-a.html

This Flu hit me hard, and I feel like I got ran over by a truck since Wednesday. Otherwise I would have made enough money last week for the brass caps and Viton O-Rings. Ahh well, next week!
