So I am pretty sure that my parking brake has some issues. First of all I can hear a slight screeching sound when I start to drive every morning for the past ~3 days. It goes away promptly though and I never have enough time to fully diagnose it. Also, I noticed that my parking brake pedal is very hard to push down at first, but if i move the truck slightly after applying the parking brake, it will loosen up and push down and give me the same feeling that it used to...I am very confused by this, and I feel that the two are related...it still holds very tight after I push it all the way down though??? please help I hate bad noises!!
Do you have a manual trans? if so, do yourself a favor before winter and replace the pads, and all the hardware on the rear. Check and lubricate the cables the best you can, cleaning any rust you find.
IMHO, If you have the auto, I wouldn't worry about the parking brake. (unless you park on a very steep hill regularly).....
Sounds like a return spring not doing it's job as quick as it should. The parking brake system is seperate from the rear disc brakes. I don't have the link now but ifyou do a search in the 1997 - 2003 7.3 L diesel, there is a thread there with a link to Guzzle's site and a complete break down of the rear brakes and servicing them.
The actuator lever that goes through the backing plate likes to rust up. The moving of the truck probably helps to seat the shoes or move the lever some and allow the pedal to go down further. The lever floats between the two shoes, it's not attached to the backing plate so it can move some as the shoes move.
