My 98 Navi is no longer able to get into Park. Yesterday I found that the shift lever felt like it was tight getting into park, Didn't pay much attention to it the first time but now I can not get the truck into PARK at all. If I push up on the shift lever with ALL my strength I might be able to get it like last night. But now i can only getting to reverse. Also noticed yester while trying to get into Park that I could not get into 2 or 1 either??? . I'm worried that I might not quite get park and find that my car has rolled down the block.
Side note, most other cars and trucks I've had require you to press on the brake pedal to get out of park. My navi was always able to get out of park by just pulling the lever (no brake applied) is that normal.
Thanks for the help as Right now I'm forced to leave my key in the navi as I cant get to park and remove it. (with tv's and system in there it makes me very nervous)
Well, I'd say the first thing you want to do is use the parking brake. Second, being able to shift out of park without stepping on the brake is definitely not normal, you should get it checked out. Sounds like you might have a problem with the shift linkage. Finally, if you put it in neutral will it let you take the key out?
Thanks Pitrow, I will definately have it looked at cause i always was able to shift out of park without the brake (Thought it was odd but never payed it any mind) Unfortunatly Neutral wont disengage the key either
I hope this is it....( well part of it anyway
Recall ID# 14537
Model Affected :1998 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
Recall Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND MULTI-PURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY WAS NOT FULLY ATTACHED TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET, THE SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY CAN COME OUT OF THE BRACKET. THE VEHICLE OPERATOR WOULD THEN NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION FROM ONE OF THE DRIVE GEAR POSITIONS INTO THE PARK POSITION EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WOULD INDICATE "PARK."
Defect Consenquence:
THE CONDITION WOULD NOT ALLOW A DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE PARK POSITION OR AFFECT PROPER NEUTRAL START SWITCH OPERATION. UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR IF THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT SET.
A very common problem with all Fords over the last 15 years has been the Torx screws on the bottom of the shift shaft working loose. If you crawl down under the dash and look up you should be able to see the lever that the shift cable connects to. Wiggle that lever and see if it's loose.
They are also bad about breaking the shift shaft in teh column, but I don't see that as much as the loose bolts. IMHO, the broken shaft results when the bolts work loose and someone tries to force it into the gear they want.

I just did this with my SD. The indicator would show park but it wouldn't start as well it would not go into 1st. I took out the screws one at a time and added a spot of loctite and bingo problem solved. I can't say if this is your problem or not but if it is it is a simple fix.
I have noticed myself on my 2003 Expedition I can't for the life of me get into 1st if I am even at a dead stop or any speed what soever. I needed to get out of a steep driveway with a loaded trailer when i moved here a month ago and had to take a running start in 2nd to get out. I wonder if mine is starting to do the same thing. It hasn't affected my park yet but its something I have noticed a little the few times I have actually needed it.
Looks like the culprit was the chift cable going out to the tranny. I disconnectted the cable from the shift lever and it moved perfectly fine. On the end of the cable under the dash has a metal rod that goes into a plastic sleeve, that end lirally came off in me hand, looks like the cable was on its last leg. Is that the shift shaft? if not can you please let me know what it is. The cable should be in tommorrow but i want to find those torque screws and tighten them up while I'm in there anyway.
