my parking brake pedal will not engage. if the pedal is pushed, the brake engages, but the pedal will not stay down. any ideas about fixing this problem?
Thereś a ratcheting assembly and small spring to keep it in place, my guess is that spring has become disengaged or damaged. Itś fairly easy to remove that pedal assembly, there are two nuts on the engine side of the firewall (just underneath the brake vacuum booster) and one bolt below the light & wiper switches under the dash (I think theyŕe all 10mm in size). Removing them may give you enough room to investigate & correct the problem, else youĺl need to disconnect the cable from the assembly underneath the LH side of the rear cab to be able to pull the entire thing out.
I have also seen cases where the release handle return spring broke/popped off allowing the handle to remain in the released position. A simple test for this, push the release handle in, and apply the park brake. If it stays engaged, there's your problem.
Tip: Don't release the brake by just pulling the release handle where it slams. Apply a little relief pressure on the pedal while you pull the handle. Try to preserve those ratchet teeth.
