I cant figure out why ford cut corners on one of the most imporant systems on there trucks, the BRAKE LINES! Went to stop and pedal went to the floor, got out looked under the truck brake fuild everywhere. The line was so rusty it split about 1/2 inch. had to drop gas tank a little to get old line out of frame PIA. Gas lines still look new,I know they can make brake lines that wont rust.
Just curious, did you ever change the brake fluid in your truck? The reason I ask is I've never seen a brake line rust through if the fluid was changed every 2-3 yrs...the fluid absorbs moisture like you wouldn't believe.
Just curious, were your brake line painted? My lines rusted out on a minivan, so I was going to paint the brake lines on my 2005, but discovered that they look like they've been painted with an enamel, which I'm hoping will extend the life....
Of course the other side if it, is you're in Michigan, and it seems I've heard some bizarre stories about how the modern "environmental friendly" road salt has urea (cow pi$$) in it!
I never changed the brake fluid until now,I will put that on the PM list. Seems like I read somewhere brake fluid should be changed every 2 years?
I do mine every 2-3 yrs.... I haven't changed a brake line since I started doing it. We also have heavily salted and calcium chloride on the roads but it hasn't caused any problems with my brake lines.
Unbelievable, I swear the same thing happened to me tonight trying to narrow down a cylinder thats missing (coil pack) put vehicle in drive to get rpms up and put foot on break pedal goes all the way to floor. **** 10 at night and I'm stuck with no breaks, Its funny if you look at break line coming out of master cylinder it is coated with rubber or something all the way until it gets to the under carriage!!!! Smart huh coat it were it doesn't need to be but don't coat it were most or the rusting will take place.
Just priced all the materials out at autozone, about 100.00 not including coil pack and all replacement boots. Not bad, just suck work ahve to drop tank to do it right, thinking about just running along frame but I guess that would be hacking it, we'll see.
