Seems to me that a lot of the members here can read codes. What is a good tool for this? Can you use these scan tools on all cars and trucks? They seem pretty useful for finding problems so I'm thinking I should buy one but don't really know how much to spend.
Randy,I have the otc 3499n code reader,it can read cars and light diesel trucks.I payed 460 for this tool.If you do a search I'm sure you could find it cheaper.I do not have gauges on my truck so I ordered the 83400 Insight with temp. probe this unit also reads codes, but I see that you have gauges on your truck. These guys on this site swear by the coolent filter also, defuser is around 150 dollars and it comes with three filters and shut off valves.
I use AutoEnginuity. You have to buy licenses to get to the nitty gritty codes or do actuations etc of specific components. It is more then just a basic code reader and depending on where you get it you can get it for cheaper then 460. I'm pretty sure at the time I got mine I didn't pay 460 for it and I got it directly from AE and that was also with the Ford License(which is what you have to have if you want to be able to read Ford diesels period).
Well worth the money and code reading alone will pay for itself rather quickly when you consider that the dealerships at best charge $100 a pop(some even more) to read codes.
I know I just bought the new Edge CS which basically the CTS but smaller and not touch screen. It is supposed to read codes. Not sure how deep it will go. I mainly got it to be my gauges as it was 300.00 and shows a LOT more than having individual gauges would. Or you would have a wall of gauges. Plus the HD style screen looks great. UPS says be here Friday. Getting excited...
So how good is the SCT tuner at reading codes? Seems that would be a good deal a tuner and code reader in one. Even if it didn't go to deep I probably wouldn't need much more anyhow.

You would actually be surprised. I see quite a few posts on here with people asking about problems and they said that that their tuner/code reader didn't pick up any codes.
SCT is only able to pick up current codes and only from 2 modules(our trucks have 9). SCT is still more of a tuner first and datalogger/code reader a distant second.
For a quick and dirty scan tool, I bought (ebay) the INNOVA 3130. If I had to do it over, I think I'd buy the next model up (3150 I think) as that one also tests the ABS system. Also look at this....scan tool AND gauges! $39.95 for another 10 days. http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm
