VSM
I have done all the right things here and still have issues.
I pulled the dash apart and got to the VSM. Un-plugged everything except the headlight and dimmer swithch. Took apart the doors, cleaned and lubed the mechanisms. Checked each door and the door ajar light came on for each one individually, as per normal. Still no dome, courtesy or cargo lights. Everything else works perfectly on the truck ( 2002 F-350 Lariat Crew Cab)
I ordered a new - revised VSM from Ford. I picked up the part on Tuesday and needed it programmed, no problem. I did not install it. I went to get fuel on Tuesday after work and all of a sudden, all the courtesy light started working normally. (they haven't worked in three weeks).?
I had a appointment to get programmed on Wednesday afternoon, so I kept the appointment, swapped boxes and got it done. Everything continued to work. I left the dash apart due to no time to put it together.
Last night, Thursday, things were working just fine. I put the dash back together again and wouldn't you know, I get it all buttoned up, and the lights stoppped working again. This is with the new VSM properly programed by a Ford Senior Master Tech. Just the dome, door courtesy and cargo again. Everything else works perfectly. I even checked each door and the ajar light comes on when each is opened individually.
Could there be a short in one of the dome, courtesy, cargo wires? I guess there is a relay in the gauge cluster that clicks when the dimmer switch is rolled past the detent to turn the lights on (which stoppped working also) Could that relay be my issue?
I am starting to get a little frustrated, any insight?
P.S. These lights should come on when any door is opened, the unlock button is pressed on the key fob, the dimmer is rollled up past the detent. All either worked perfect, or not at all.
Thanks .
Oh, and AZ finally replaced my alt for me. That was a bit of a chore -- they superceded the part I had with something else, and with a different core charge. So he had to play a lot of games to get me the correct part in the system replacing the old part at no charge. Fun...

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Silly thing is, this morning, I got in the truck to come to work, and still no lights. I get to work, open the door to get out, and the lights now work.
I used the truck all weekend and nothing worked, now they do.
I am very sure it is the relay that is the 10 minute battery saver. I bet that if I keep that from tripping, I will be all set. If it trips, Is will stay closed and I will have nothing again. Makes sense, because it's all or nothing, and everything else is working flawlessly.
Hmmm, I wonder if that function can be programmed to be disabled?
If my sources are correct, that relay lives in the gauge cluster, which is non-serviceable, it's soldered to the electronic circuit board. I had that apart and inspected it.
So, if anyone needs a used and working VSM for an F-350 Larait, it's going cheap at half price, pre-programmed.....
I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for a repalcement cluster.
Joe...
Apparently, there was a very small leak in a plug in the roof. A little corrosion started on the front dome light assy. connector and ground of my 2002 Crew Cab. That shorted the fixture, providing power at all times. The relay did its job by shutting power off after ten minutes though.
The other problem was a pin connector that failed elsewhere in the wiring. Must have been an expansion/contraction thing. Looked like the female portion was enlarged. This is what caused the intermittent behavior. (which subsequently failed all together)
So, pin connector replaced, dome assy replaced, and all works well now.
Thank God I have a friend who is a Senior Master Tech at Ford. His skills are remarkable and any Ford Dealer is blessed to have one like him.

I'll get all caught up when I get settled....
