vsm replacement

Ok,so I think I have a vsm module problem. My door locks work intermitently the door ajar light will come on,the auto headlights wont work and a few other wierd things that happened all at once.I already tried wd40 in all 4 doors. No help.Key fobs have same problem too..Its also a 2002 which is known for this..Anyways what I need to know is I will need to get the new vsm reflashed by the dealer and was wondering if I would have to remove my dp tuner programmer before thats done ?Wasnt sure if something might get screwed up because I rteally dont know what a reflash to the vsm involves....Thanks

Yes you will need to visit your friendly Ford dealer to get the VSM programmed, and I'd pull the DP before you go since I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. If they decide to reflash your PCM with the DP in there you'll loose all of Jody's magic.

Ed could get it, or you might even find it on ebay or get a used one in the junk yard. The problem is it needs to be programmed by the Ford computer. That means you've got to visit a dealer somewhere even if you do all the labor yourself.

Keep in mind different dealers charge different amounts for programming things. It won't hurt to call around.

Hmmmm.. Do I need to leave the old one in for them to flash the new one or can I remove old install new in the stealers parking lot and have it flashed. I guess worse case I can just remove the bolts that hold it in and leave it connected by the harness and then the tech would only have 20 minutes of work. Of course ill pay for an hour,lol...

By the way Chris would I throw any codes for this because my AE doesnt show any besides the p0603 I think it is which I believe is common for a chipped truck... I dont think the vsm is completely shot yet because If I give it a few minutes it works correctly a couple times, meaning The doors lock and unlock ect. But if I try to duplicate the problem by hitting the door locks several times in a row it happens easily.. The door ajar light comes on , ect...

I believe they have to get the old info off the old one to stick on the new one.

You're right, you'll pay for an hours labor for a few minutes worth of work, after waiting hours to get the truck in the bay and a tech on it.

Can we start a pool on how much additional work the "service adviser" recommends while your truck is in there?

I don't know if there would be any codes generated by this. You might be able to run some sort of test to verify the issue, but I'd have to do some reading to see if I can find the right test.

I removed my old vsm and let it hang below the dash still pluged in into the harness. Went to the local ford stealer and deposited $145 dollars for 15 minutes of work. After the 'programming' the tech told me that my old unit was so fried that he was not able to use it to program my new one - he used the build sheet instead.

btw got the vsm from ed for about $120 (he also emailed me the build sheet just because... ) Last I heard, in different posts, is that the vsm's are back ordered (?)

Good luck

Mark

PS I got and old one in the garage - you don't have to look on ebay !

If you are going to pay a minimum charge of one hour to have the vsm reprogramed you can think about having the tech install the new one in your hour that you pay for and reprogram it, it might not cost any more. That's what i did and it seemed to work for me. It all depends on the dealer!

Well I just called dealer. Vsm on back order, should get by 1/19/10.. Price of 125.00.. Called service dept and asked for a price to reflash and they said 85.00.. Not sure if thats a quote for an hour of labor or a special reflash rate. Prob for hour of labor.. Thought it would be worse.. I wonder when ford will make this a recall.. Dealer said the supplier is 450 parts behind on order right now.... Im sure it never will be recalled...Unbelievable..

Ford doesn't seem to be concerned about all the 6.0 customers that thay have mad (and will lose), I'am sure they are not concered with the vsm's!
Funny how the price is way down on the vsm's now, when i checked on mine before i replaced it I think the price was like 250.00 at the dealer, i paid about 125 from ed the parts guy. Sounds like the cps deal also, interesting that after the cps recall the price dropped from 90 bucks down to around 20 bucks!

I was surprised at the price from the dealer. I fully expected to only get a price and order it from Ed. But for 125 ill buy it from the dealer in case its a bad part or something.... What were the symtoms you were having with your bad VSM? Similar to mine?

Key fobs not working, auto headlights not working, interior lights not working when doors open, power locks not working, after leaving vehicle the rear cargo light would stay on for 2 minutes, the door ajar light always on and i don't remember if anything else was not working. I know one thing I have enough lube on my door locks for a lifetime!
