package 1 is going to have better flow, package 2 is going to be less work, less pieces.
also package 1 is going to be a little harder since the flange is SS and the flange is CS (welds more prone to crack)
I certainly can't see every aspect of the elbow flange in that picture but from what I see, it looks to me like a handy fabricator could whip one up out of sheet steel fairly easy with the right equipment and knowhow.
I pointed out a similar flange to people here awhile back- cept I think it was about half the price of that one shown in option 2...at any rate, one slightl problem with our particular turbine housing is that ATS decided to use some goofball pattern on the bolts, so on one of those standard 5-bolt flanges I believe only 4 of the 5 bolts will actually line up.
Just called ATS ... After a couple minutes of BS telling me they were not supporting stuff that old any longer and they have no IDI parts, I finally said, well I guess I'll have to go swim in a competitors pond since y'all aren't going to support the IDI any longer, He then changed his tune and said they should have some by the end of the year, I called him a liar and repeated his original statement, he ho hummed and tried to evade the situation!
I did try and corner him with "Is ATS going to support the IDI again" ... He would not answer the question and beat around the bush, I asked again, and again he beat around the bush and would not give a straight answer.
So, No definitive answer, I didn't expect one, it's a corporation with the corporate BS lies and no commitments.
He kept mentioning Ford, over and over and over ... I wonder if Ford is pushing them to stop supporting the IDI!
I really am kinda suprised they have supported us as long as they have, the percentage of the truck buyers that bought an after market turbo for these rigs were small, I only have to assume that 20 years later that percentage is way down, as most people aren't going to buy a 2ooo buck upgrade for a 1000 buck truck. lol
ya starmilt, true for most. but i paid 1500 for a truck and am 16k into it, and looking at another 15k to go. we arent asking for a 2k kit, just the 500 buck piece to help the factory kit work better. there's enough factory kits out there to keep it alive.
I kinda hate AT's solution for the turbo outlet anyway- I don't understand why they can't offer a nice 3" V-band outlet, and corresponding downpipe. But maybe that huge cast elbow is how they justify charging $600 for it, I dunno.
It's pretty simple... ATS like most companies is not going to invest in the tooling required to make these parts unless they know for certain they can make their money back 100 times over. Tooling is always the most expensive investment for a company in manufacturing. When we feel the need for a new mold at my company it is a 6 month process just to go from initial concept to design sign off, this is designing the tool, doing a cost roll up, prototyping etc. Six months before we ever start cutting metal for the tool and this is for stuff that is new and will probably have no problem selling. If we were doing things for 20 year old engines I would be more then a little hesitant to invest that kind of time and money.
I'm kind of new to this and want to upgrade my exhaust. Since I have the stock ATS turbo, is the only real option I have either to transition from the stock flange, or to upgrade the turbo to a Banks or Hypermax? Thanks in advance.

good luck right now finding the outlet flange lol theres a line of us here who are waitin to find one too and like the others were sayin banks is just gonna sell outta there turbos and be done with it and the hypermax in my opinion isnt worth the money if you already have a turbo on urs... the small gain you might and i mean might get outta a hypermax compared to your stock turbo definitely not worth the $$$ you would pay
