Technically it never was part of Mass. In the 1600's part of southern Maine was partitioned to the Mass. Bay Colony for colonization and permit by King Charles. But the failure to do so left the Province of Maine to it's own devices & around the 1820's became a state.
So even though Boston thought of Maine as a suburb it really wasn't.
By the grace of God Maine never became part of Mass even though to this day we are still invaded by the inhabitants of your state.
By the way Maine had more Canadian's and almost became part of Canada.
In regards to your jest of Maine all I can say is .......... "Gotcha"
I'm not so sure on this history lesson. Maine was always an exclave of Mass until 1820. Maine inhabitants were always ruled by Boston law. It wasn't until the War of 1812 that Maine began its secession talks.
Ironically, Maine's statehood was to help balance the free and slave states to allow Missouri to become a state in 1821. If people down south didn't want to become a state, Maine probably wouldn't be.......Maine.
Anyways, morning everyone!
Nice long and relaxing weekend.
Oh yeah, and I always took the Maineiac term in jest as well. It's not a bad title compared to other states around the country. Don't stop using it Ken.
I like to hear about the history of how states came to be!
There was a cool show on the History channel that went through all the states in America and its history. It was pretty cool. I learned more in that TV series than at any time in my edumacation!
I guess your take on Maine/Massachusetts would depend on which source you read...there are different opinions. Since none of us were around then...we'll have to take their words for it.
I usually will watch those types of show instead of the crap on the regular channels.
I'm the same way and you're right, most of the regular channels have crap in them . History channel is probably my favorite channel.

ope everyone has a great day!!!
I guess so. Remember when Pluto used to be a planet? History and school books of the RECENT past say it's a planet, then a bunch of men and women who are authorities in this area got together to say that it isn't so it isn't. Is it?
I suppose the history debate may be more like who and what authority recorded what. It wasn't that long ago and someone was alive at the time that wrote all those things down.
Having a nice morning thus far. It's nice and cool outside!
Discovery Channel is also a lot of fun to watch!!!
Pluto was taken from a "Planet" to a "Dwarf Planet". It is still technically a "planet". It just has a prefix now!!!!
And here is a quote from the maine.gov website uner history:
Maine was at one time part of Massachusetts. It became its own state in 1820, becoming the 23rd state admitted to the United States of America, although its northern borders were not finalized until 1842
The mass. bay colony never owned all of Maine they were chartered to an area known at York county which they did not uphold and lost all rights.
In the late 1700's Mass sold that territory to a Philadelphia businessman. Their rights were to protect that territory which they also failed to do and the war of 1812 brought about the state of Maine.
They may have claimed it as a district which it was listed as, district of Maine, but never had legal rights to it, only a charter from the 1600's which became defunct after the revolutionary war.
Oh No... I'm not debating... LOL...
I just remembered seeing that a while ago and since people were talking about it, I thought I would post it. I don't know nearly enough to debate with anyone. I've only been here 3.5 years. lol
I will say that per your post the maine.gov website doesn't say much...

I thought they said it was a star now. Oh well. What ever "they" (whoever they are) say it is, I guess the generations to come will have to accept it if it's in the classroom books.....of course until "they" (whoever the new "theys" are) say it's different.
And the updated history books in England is removing the Holocaust and the Crusades, so they don't offend certain groups of people, so according to what they are teaching, it never happened.
