I have a 18 minute commute from home to work which is about 10 miles long
That's not bad, maybe 1/2 hour in winter, eh? Still not bad compared to some who live in the burbs around big cities and have hours to commute.

This is common in plow trucks that are just plow trucks. They sit almost all summer and most of the winter (only driven during storms) and static moisture kills the underbellies.

Someone on this forum suggested doing that every now and then....don't know if it really helps.

I have 25+ mile to work. One way is about 45 min. typical. Sometimes an hour during the summer... Winter is going to suck.
See, I knew I was going to get razzed about it. The truth of the matter is, it's not conventional wisdom....it's different and people just don't know enough about it. I didn't up until a few weeks ago. Friends of ours had their two children (now age 2 and 4) at home and that's how we even found out that it's possible. So, I started doing some research AND the *hit hit the fan!!!!
Did you know that over the last 10+ years, C-sections have increased from 1-2 out of every 10 births to 1 out of every 3. Some Maine hospitals are boasting a 42% C-section ratio! WTF! So, I gave those stats (given by the hospitals themselves, not some midwife website) and they said, "Well, I bet the mortality rate of Women and Babies has decreased." (meaning they're surviving more now). So, I researched and again, the *hit hit the fan! Since the increase in C-sections from 1996 to now, the mortality rate for women and babies (as well as the complications for both) have gone up! WTF! This is from credible sources such as the World Health Organization, the Mayo Clinic, and the CDC!
1 out of every three pregnant women that go into a hospital in this country will get cut to deliver. The WHO believes that over half of C-sections in this country are unnecessary. So, now, I'm wondering, well, is a CS so bad? and after a little more research, the *hit hit the fan, again! There are risks to both mom and babie and hospital facts show exactly the issues arising (percentages, not all) for mom and baby out of this minor surgery.
So.....I need to catch my breath here. I only found some of this stuff out in the last few weeks. Prior to this, we would probably be doing what the "norm" is and probably be fine. Everything has risks. It's been stressful dealing with an option, even if there may be a better option, cause before, we had one option; hospital.
Howdy Maine-iacs...welcome to the weekend. Some pretty heavy discussion here about child birth. At one point in time...virtually all births happened at home. My grandmother delivered 8 in her bedroom...not at one time!!! The advances in monitoring equipment that midwives use is amazing. Of course...they are trained to call for paramedics if something goes wrong.
Good luck Ken...to you and your bride!!! Obviously...you've done your home work.
Justin...good luck also to you and your wife!!! Hospitals are a great place to have babies.
Well we have been to Maine Med many times and got the best treatment and the best doctors / nurses. I base my facts off what people I know tell me of their experiences. Numbers from the news and internet mean practically nothing. Numbers are faked just to make a place look better and get it more money. But when I have a friend at work that had three kids at a hospital, that's the number I'm going with.
But here is a link. Maine has one of 'America's Best Hospitals'
I was going you a hard time Ken! You and you wife have to do, what you feel, is right for you. Like we are not pumping our new born with 200 shots just minutes after he is born. He will get only the shots he actually needs.

Ken, thanks....your words mean a lot to me, really! Prior to 1900, 90% of ALL WORLD WIDE births were at home, so I agree. We met with the midwife today and all went well. You are correct as well. They have all the modern equipment for monitoring heart beat, oxygen, etc. In an emergency, hospital is 4 miles away and paramedics and ambulance are called ahead for standby.

Justin, I hear ya and so glad to hear how you feel about the shots.....that is one thing that scared us and we're doing exactly what you're doing. Babies weakened immune system at birth doesn't always take well to all the shots they give them. Timing is the key, which is what we've researched. 99% of ALL births in the United States are in hospitals, so of course we're doing something right at the hospital. Not all hospitals are the same and we're just researching. It's early and my wife may decide hospital is best for her.
Thanks for the wishes and support guys. Justin, you have mine. Good luck dude and congrats. Keep us posted.
Ken, just don't let yourself be scared by people that don't know anything. We have gotten so much crap from people about the shots. People seem to think that without 200 shots at birth the baby will die and that's just not true...

Thanks Justin. Good to hear it from someone else in yourself. That's what they say, if you don't do what's "conventional" all hell will break loose! The Hepatitis B shot they give newborns is only associated with and primarily transferred through intravenous drug use or sex. And according to a study of all those infected with Hepatitis B in 2000, 4 adults might be prevented from contracting liver cancer by massive vaccination of more than four million newborns born each year.
I was curious to know if New England Dragway was still around. I used to like to go there when "Big Daddy" Don Garlits was running his rail there. He was awesome and won every race I saw there. There was "The Snake" Don Prudhomme, TV Tommy Ivo and Cha-Cha Muldowney with her pink rail. The funny cars were awesome and if you saw a race at night the burn outs were spectacular.
They are still running but I couldn't believe the admission price. When I went it was $5.00 unless it was a major IHRA race then you could pay $10.00. Now you pay $30.00 for an IHRA event.
You should read how they squeeze the nickels out you.
I've never been to one of those races. I used to go to the nascar truck races at the las vegas motor speedway. That was always fun.
I was mowing the yard today and got attacked by bees. I got stung four times and my dog Lucy got stung when she attacked one I brought into the house on my shirt.
I'm not sure this qualifies under the home ownership rule. This just qualifies under the I'm unlucky rule. LOL
Yeah, I think it qualifies....I had to buy some of that wasp spray and deal with a ton of nests on my property. I had two dive bomb me, but no stings. Was able to get them all this year without incident. They come back in full force ever single year!
Good luck getting a snowblower. Have you checked uncle henry's or craigslist. The only thing about getting one used is you really don't know what you're getting. I bought a tractor snow thrower in uncle henry's and have used it for the last two years with little to no maintenance. I was nervous, but it worked out and we got a smoking deal on one. We got the entire tractor and thrower for less than what just the thrower costs new and I love the machine!!! Works awesome!
