What year 460 is it?

1971/73 429 / 1973/78 and some (F100/350 & Econoline) 1979 460's.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
D3VE-A2A = D3VZ6049A .. Cylinder Head
1973 429 / 1973/76 460
------------------------
C9AE = I could not find a cross reference for this rod, but the rod bearings are the same 1968/73 429 (except Boss 429) & 1968/79 (prolly later-I didn't look) 460.
D9HZ6211A (replaced C8SZ6211A) .. Rod Bearing.
----------------------------------------------------
D4VE-AA = D4VZ6316A .. Harmonic Balancer-Use with 460 engine with D1VE block casting numbers.
Fits: 1974/78 460 and some 1979 460's.
---------------------------------------
In mid-year 1979, Ford changed the 460 engine, the block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB. This 460 uses a weighted spacer, the D1VE blocks do not.
The harmonic balancer and flexplate used with this 460 are not the same as the ones used with the D1VE blocks.
Passenger Cars are not affected by this running change (there is no before/from a certain serial number or production date) because the 460 was no longer offered after 1978.
You cannot go by casting/engineering/part number prefixes to ID what years the part fits and/or what it is from, you wanna know why?
Ford is in-famous for replacing (updating) 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY YEAR! The rod bearings are a typical example, the reason why I typed the part numbers.
Keeping track of all these number changes was...and still is...a full time job in itself, and a royal PITA!
btw: This is...at least...the 100th time I typed the info inre to 1971/79 429/460 block casting numbers here on FTE. The info comes straight from the 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car & Light Truck Parts Catalogs.

Need to Determine Correct 460 Balancer
I recently acquired a 1976 F358 SCS which the PO told me has a rebuilt 460.
It's impossible to correctly time this engine -- as the rubber in the "harmonic balancer" (correct FoMoCo terminology?) is shot.
The number stamped on the existing "balancer" is D0CE-B. But since the engine was rebuilt, who knows if the correct part was used?
What is the best way to determine the correct replacement "balancer"?
This looks like a possible NumberDummy challenge?
Thanks -- this site is a wonderful resource!

look behind the balancer and see what type of spacer it has in it. if it has a plain round one then it's a 78 or earlier, if it has a hatchet weight behind it's then it's a 79 or later externally balanced engine. Only real split you need to know on the light duty engines.
Now that is the figure out the 'correct" version. But honestly all the balancers used on these engines were neutral balance and it used the spacer for the inbalance unlike the small blocks that it was done in the harmonic dampener itself.
Other then that look at the block above the starter for a casting number. it will get you in the ballpark. Personally I would go ask for one for a 76 ford car with a 460 in it. just make sure it has the timing marks in the right place for your timing pointer. (you know compare to what you have) Also make sure it has the same mounting holes for the pulleys. The balance itself will be the same.

Internally Balanced D1VE 1973-78 460
Looking near the starter revealed a D1VE-6015 block number. Which means it has an internally balanced 1973/78 block, correct for the 1976 MY SCS.
Checked a couple of Ford parts sources for D4VZ6316A balancer but came up dry (obsolete).
So I ordered a Professional Products "PowerForce" 80008 Harmonic Damper.
Should have it in a day or two and will re-check timing once it's on. (Used the TDC mechanical verification to find 0 degrees.)
