i have a 78 460 that i pulled out of a motor home to install in my 78 F250 4 x 4. i've heard that these engines arent very good for this use, is this true ? i pulled these numbers off the block. D1VE - 6013 A2A and these off the heads D3VE A2A.
any help on this is appreciated, thanks.
Generally 460s and most other late '70s to early '90s motors are all pretty soft on power compared to mid '60s powerhouse motors, and new stuff that makes over 1 hp per cube even in economy cars. The motor home 460 isn't going to be much different than any other pickup 460.
Are you going to go through it, or just hoping to do a low buck swap?
What do you want, and what are you swapping out?
IMO I would not go through a 460 swap unless I was getting a lot more power for my repower dollar.
the engine only has 43,000 original miles on it, my truck has already been converted over to accept a 460 swap. just looking to drop it in and hopefully go.
Should be drop in but remember the change in balance in the 460 somewhere in '79 maybe. (not sure) Just make sure your "new" motor balance matches what you have. (If I understand you to say you are already running a 460)
Those motors should be nearly identical, but the new one may have a bigger cam. Still not a lot of power though. If it is power you want, deck the block to get the CR bumped up a bit and consider swapping heads. If you do not want to go through all of that, at the very least consider swapping the cam timing set for a pre-72 straight up set. The 88-97 sets should also work.
right now i'm just looking to drop the motor in, i have a 1970 460 in the garage but it needs to be gone thru and i dont have the money right now. i just want the truck to be a dog is all.
