Okay so, I have an EFI '88 F250hd ext cab xlt lariat with 160,000 miles on it and a blown head gasket.. i figure its time for a rebuild but im lost on what i should be looking at so it all goes together..
what i want, is a truck capable of pulling a big *** trailer up and down hills and steep grades with more power to pass and still be able to merge onto a busy highway or if need be to stomp on the pedal and git up 'nd go...
my budget for now is, $1600. im still running stock manifolds and factory pipe. im looking to get headers, dual pipes, and head porting/ cylinder boring with that budget.
Heres what i did to my 1988 460 efi motor:
hey guys just got done with my build and first off i want to thank everyone on here for all there help!!!!!! my build is a 1988 f350 466 EFI build with a comp xe256h-14 cam. i checked and double checked all tolerances, torque values and really took my time with the build. It was truely a labor of love as i had a blast doing it!!! I replaced the complete Emission system--- with all new sensors, pump. Fuel system---- fuel tanks to adjustable fuel pressure regulator---Exhaust system----Hedman headers, catalytic convertor, and catback. For the C6 tranny--- front pump seal, rear seal, hughes "1200 stall fuel miser" convertor and a new black stripe modulator. All vacuum hoses are new. When i did the cam breakin the motor started right up and was brought up to 2000- 2500 rpms for 30 minutes. Everything went real well but the motor did just die once during the cam breakin and the headers did glow red for a minute until the timing was advanced. We cut the filter open and all was good. The motor starts right up and idles @ 650-700 rpm with a slight surge, possibly due to the new cam
So BigLar what else did you do, bored, crank turned, head work?
Well i did alot. I totally rebuilt the 460 Bored -line honed -decked- reworked the heads- crank turned and balanced-went with speedpro pistons but should have gone with Keith black Hypers because of the CH and it give a better quench. ARP fasteners through out and really checked and set my tolerances for the motor as if i were building it for HI Performance blueprinting. For the tranny i rebuilt it and got a hughes 1200 stall convertor for better mileage and went with hedman for the headers-coated shorties. rebuilt the entire exhaust-Fuel- emission system. Re did the frame bushings and POR15 the frame. basically from the Cab down and bed down its a new truck. Its real important that the motor starts right away the first time because of Camshaft breakin!!. I used the ZDDP paste from Kirban on the cam lobes and the lifter bottoms and used Joe gibbs breakin oil for the start up and had NO problems. I had a fuel pump issue and ended up replacing the 2 brand new intank pumps because they were a POS Bosch brand. because of those DAMN headers there was alot of Fabbing to do to the trans cross member and rerouting of the fuel lines for safety. In other words i had alot of fun doing this and now have a brand new truck for about a 7th of the price of a new one. If you need any wiring-Vacumn Schematics just ask because trust me i have them or any other help just ask
