After reading through the numerous posts in the forums and seeing that the 460 was not an option on my '77 F250 I decided to pull the casting numbers and try to find out just what it really is that rests under my hood.
Here is what I found:
Cylinder Block - D1ve A2B
Cylinder Heads - D3VE A2A
Intake Manifold - D3VE A1B
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to tell what year this engine was made or what other useful information I might be able to gain from these numbers?
Having this information makes it a heck of a lot easier to find parts.
The 'D' means the part is from the 1970's. ( on ford casting #'s, c= 1960's, d=1970's. I assume that goes on into the 80's, and 90's, but who cares about those trucks) The second # is the year. D1 = 1971, D3 = 1973. This info may still not tell you the year of the engine, since ford sometimes used older parts on their 'new' motors. I have seen and heard of 390 engines with heads with 1968 castings on them. Its believed that ford simply had these parts left over and was using them up. Maybe the same case here??? Or maybe someone has swapped stuff. I dont know what the other numbers are, but if you check the VIN, it can give you all kinds of info, as long as the cab on your truck is the original one, or you can read the one on the frame. 1st three numbers are the series. (i.e. F26= F250 4x4) Next letter is engine. For 77 that should have been B for 300 I-6, maybe G for 302, or H for 351M or S for 400. Next letter is the assemble plant, and the last numbers are Consecutive Unit #. Hope this helps.
I found the VIN number ona tag in the engine compartment and compared it to the door sticker, The numbers match up but I am still leary as to just what on this beast is original. Where should I be able to find the numbers on the frame?
The VIN number I found is:
F26SRY64317
I am taking it that so far, this is an F250 4X4 that came with a 400 cid originally
the decoding of the casting numbers shows that I have a 1971 block with 1973 heads and intake. Which would explain why a 1977 valley pan has wreaked havoc on my engine.

I pulled a 460 from a 77 Lincoln, that was still untouched, it had the D1VE block and the D3VE-A2A heads on it. The D1VE block is a car block. This is a very common combo.
I dont know that the different year parts would cause problems. I have heard that Ford mixed and matched parts through those years. Maybe on your truck, maybe not. The VIN on the frame is located on the passenger side. It's stamped into the frame on the top side, about 8" in front of where the rear cab bolts onto the frame. At least thats where it is on my 77 highboy. Can't say for sure other trucks. I never knew there was one there until i blasted and painted the frame.

Okay you guys no bubble bursting info here.
The Most Important part of the engine part is the suffix when compared to the first 4 digits of the casting number & the Day they were cast.
a block with a D1VE-6050-A is a whole lot better than a D1VE-6050-ABA.
So basically you have a 1971 DESIGNED Block that had received NUMEROUS changes.
The head are the same.
Those heads were Designed in 1973 for a Lincoln or T-Bird
& because thyey have has Numerous changes made to them since 1973 when they were first designed ,they aren't worth much more than a $100 a piece.
You need to find the ACTUAL DAY they were cast !
Look for numbers like this near the other numbers:
ok guys,
new dillemma ... could you please take a peek at my post in the 385 Series engine section, Titled '77 460 won't start ...
The longer I have this truck, the more I think I should just break down, get a cherry picker and stand and just overhaul this engine documenting all the numbers along the way.

First year of that design, the suffix is how many changes it got since then.
Things like:
1) a hole here for a expansion plug
2) remove this or that
3) add this or that.
