I have a 68 F100 Flareside 8' Longbed that has a stock 360 V8 2BBL 2V manual choke engine with a manual 3 speed trans. I'm rebuilding the engine back stock and moving the stick shaft to the floor. The only major change is that I'm changing from a 2BBL 2V to a 4BBL electrical choke carb. My question is what cfm carb will work the best on a stock 360 V8? A 500, 600, 650, 750, or 800 cfm? A little help please. Thank you.
I would urge you to visit the FE Forums and review the threads talking about 360s, "360 to 390" etc.
The stock 360 has low compression and a down the hole piston height, both of which, along with the cam and exhaust manifolds, conspire to limit power while maximizing fuel consumption. Rebuilding into a 390 with 9.5 compression and a couple other details will give you up to 50% more power with the same fuel consumption.
If you MUST redo the 360, a 500 cfm 4bbl is plenty big.
I have a rebuilt 360 in my truck now, torque grind cam with the cam advanced 4 degrees, cast iron Ford S code 4BBL intake, and a 600cfm Holley 4150 vacuum secondary carb. It does pretty well, permanently bent my rear springs from hauling too much weight and now it'll blow the driveshaft apart if I get on it too hard. It only gets about 13mpg empty, and 7-8 while towing though, in a 69 F250 2wd with a 4speed.
I'm pulling it back out and going to a 7.3IDI later this year, I can't stand the mileage. Of course, the only thing I can't pass is a gas station.
Thanks guys for your replys to my thread. I'm not looking for power. This engine has 200 thousand plus miles on it and when I got the truck the oil was thick and black as maple syrup. I did 2 flushes and the oil still didn't look good so I decided to rebuild it back stock and convert it from a stock 2BBL to a 4BBL, up grade the ignition, distributor, etc. I already have a car with POWER. My fun driver is a 1965 Plymouth Satellite Sport Coupe, which is called by my friends "Anbuis". It is black on black with a 528 HEMI with 610 HP with NITRO. I'm going with the Eblebrook aluminum lowriser Preformer Manifold with Eblebrook 500cfm Preformer 4BBl with electric choke. Thanks again guys for recommendations. The 500cfm will do the job I need done.
