I have a 1971 f 100 4x4 currently has a 360 with a 2bbl carb has anyone used a 2bbll to 4bbl adapter to mount a 4bbl on the stock 2bbl intake. if so how did this work . im not trying to make a racer out of this truck just trying to improve gas milage slightly and get a working choke .
I think converting to a 4 barrel carburetor on a two barrel manifold will compound your problems. I suggest Junk Yard bits and pieces to re fit your existing setup. Be sure the systems established to warm the intake manifold, carburetor base and incoming air supply are in place. Then when everything is working rebuild or replace the current two barrel carburetor if needed. Usually choke problems, hard start and stumbling when cold and many some hot starting issues revolve around one or more of these heating systems not functioning. Many different systems were used, you will just need to sort out the ones that don't work. We can help. Or...go with an Edelbrock performer and 600 CFM carburetor with electric choke.

I agree. Your best bet is to put a good rebuilt 2 barrel back on, and add an electric choke kit. You can get everything you need at Autozone pretty cheap.
Also, nothing helps cold starting, driveability and mileage like good, reliable spark. If they're old, replace your plugs, wires and distributor cap with new ones. Convert your points to electronic ignition with a Pertronix Ignitor kit ($40-50), and install a new aftermarket coil ($25-35).

Its weird, but 4v's do improve mileage but not
a whole lot.The best I got out of my
4v is 16 maybe 17mpg on highway of course.The
2v got up to 12-14mpg highway. I never touched
the 2v except to richen it up.Did that once.
If I had a extra 4v I would negotiate putting
it on the 2v truck.
Go for the conversion. However, don't do the adapter deal. Either spend some cash for an Edelbrock manifold, or go grab a cast iron 4 intake at the salvage yard for 30 bucks. You'll see great improvement. At least I did. Good luck.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Oct-02 AT 03:14 PM (EST)]Looks like the system triggers on the word carburetor (but how about carb, carborator, carburettor?) and goofs it up if the word is already in the middle of a link. Anyway, if you want to see some stock carb pics, check here http://www.clubfte.com/users/mlf72f250/index.html
Then go to the bottom of the page and click on the stock carb link.
