360 4BBL mainfold?

I have a 1970 with a completely stock 360, down to the 2bbl carb. I'd like to put a 4bbl on it. Not being all that familiar with Fords, and knowing that the FE was used from the 50s through the 70s, is there a manifold that will work better than another, or ones to stay away from?

I'd rather not go out and buy something new and shiny, rather find something in a junkyard or on Craigslist etc...

I'm still after a low-perf type dual plane, as the engine is stock and it's used as a truck. OE Ford is good, aftermarket is good, single plane full race is not what I need. I will be running a small, probably 450-600 cfm carb.

All 360's came with 2V carbs. A popular swap back then and today are the 4V manifolds found on 1965/68 passenger cars with 390/410/428's, or the 4V manifold used on 1974/76 F100/350's w/390 4V's.

The factory S intake is probably the better choice. You can see what one looks like here. 390SIntake1-1

I used an Edelbrock Performer on my 360. The performance is not really any different from a stock FE 4BBL dual-plane manifold, but saves about 70 pounds off the front end (and off your back when you remove and replace the thing!) and it does add a bit of a bling factor. And it's definitely an improvement over the factory 2BBL manifold. But you should really be able to pick up a factory 4BBL manifold from a wrecking yard for a lot less money...I was quoted about 50 bucks for the manifold of my choice when I went looking, before I bought the Performer, and they had a number of them to choose from already pulled an sitting on the shelf.

Your results may vary...

But...as you're not too far from me, if you can't find anything up there, let me know and I can see if my local yards here still have anything.

I have the S code intake on my 360, and it does pretty decent, but then I have warmed up the engine a bit with a cam and altered cam timing. I still need to dial in the secondaries on the carb, since it does fall off a bit before they open, but overall it does pretty good. The downside is mileage- I'm lucky to hit 12 empty, and 7.5 towing seems to be the norm. Driving it nice doesn't make a huge difference either.
I'm thinking this engine is going to go into my F100 though, since a 360 can handle higher rpms than a 390 and I have a 7.3 IDI waiting on this engine bay to be empty.

Jared, what carb are you running? I'm running a Performer 600cfm and feel it's over-carbed a bit for my otherwise stock engine. I put a Holly 450 on it and really liked the throttle response but had a few problems with it that I didn't have time just then to sort out, so it wasn't on there long enough to get mileage figures or do any towing. With the Performer I average 10 though that used to be a little better, I was getting upwards of 12 empty, 9-10 towing. I hauled a two-car hauler to LA and back twice (full going down, empty coming back) and averaged just under 10 for the trip.

600cfm Holley 4160 w/manual choke.
I could probably squeeze another 1-2mpg out of it if I were to actually tune it properly for this altitude and throw my DSII ignition in it.

S code

I've got an S code manifold on my 390. I got it out of a junkyard for $25. They are heavy. I put it on with a cherry picker. Also running a Holley 600. Much better than the stock 2 barrel and a cheap way to go.

X2 on the S code manifold, but you can hurt your back installing it. I think they weigh about 90 lbs. The Edlebrock is a much better choice, but at $500 it's not cheap. I found one at a swap meet, didn't know it had a crack in the water passage where the thermostat goes. Dumped antifreeze into the lifter valley, and got a lesson on how abrasive coolant is. Destroyed the engine. Now I'm back to an S code.

More like $300 new, but still a chunk of money for no performance improvement over a Ford factory cast iron 4bbl manifold. And I too used my engine hoist to remove the old 2bbl lump. Estimated weight on those things is about 80 pounds, and I ain't as young and spry as I used to be...!

Ok, so what did the factory S intake come on, and how do I identify it from any other FE intake? Casting numbers?

Tigerdan, I may take you up on your offer. My local junkyard has a few stragglers left from the 80's, everything else is 90's and newer. I'm going to go through the buddy list locally and see if anything turns up first.

4bbl FE intakes with a S cast into the intake runner were available on 66-69 Fairlane, LTD, Cougar, Mustang, T-Bird, etc.

However, I found mine under the hood of a dentside Ford truck. I'm sure it didn't come there stock, but check the trucks too. You just never know.

Where are you in Cali? I have a S code from a 68 390 T-Bird Special holding up my RV gate from falling over. Available for free in Glendale AZ.

Easy to ID, don't sweat the numbers, just look for the S. You should be able to see it in the photo in my first post.
