No my piston were fine. Are they pits or dents from some previous owner useing junk gp? Iether way I guess it would be a good thing to swap them out. Give you a chance to check the crank and stuff since it did a runaway. I know that it is extra but I would stud it. They are only about $120 more than stock bolts and are a good upgrade.
Yea there are pics in my album or on the 6.9 teardown post, when I changed my first set of GPs about 10 years ago,I noticed half of them were very short, they were autolites, maybe it happened back then.I put autolites back in then,[didnt know any better]
Ouch! Man I am glad that I was on FTE when I did my swap. I just wish that I had read up on pulling the ip back then. I pulled the ip,houseing and gear together. I put it back together one tooth off. it would run but like crap. That is whe nI found out how to use the mirror and light method lol.
Mine may have been like that to,Thats why the front cover is coming off this time to make sure,It has a oil leak there at the crank anyway, might as well fix that to.
Not bad idea to probly go through it all. I replaced all my rod and mains anf the oilpump along with the front and rear seals. I figured that while it was out it was the time to do it. My girl wanted to kill me as the cost went up but hey it should last for a long time. By the way the rod and mains didn't show any wear at all even with about 250000 on them. I didn't touch the ip because it had a rebiuld date on it of 05. i hope it last a while as well lol.
I looked at the pics. The ydo look like dents from a plug tip. I wonder if a piece got cuaght up in a vale and damaged the seat area? Did you happen to pullthe valves and look at them? My old ones were a little pitted whe ni put it back together but i did resaet them. I knew it was just a matter of time till they gave me problems lol. But as I said before she was getting a little touchy on the cost thing so I didn't say nuthin bout it.
No i didnt pull them,to be honest I dont know how! Im planning on getting them reworked or replaced anyway,A shop over in Pensacola will rework them for 200$ for the set.Or im sure they will gladly sell me some new ones if need be!!
They are easy to get out. You just need the valve sring compressor to do it. If you could pullthem ahead of time it would let you know if they are any good. Autozone will rent the tool for it. With the heads off the big c-clamp type works better. I would find out if they are gonna replace the seats or just reseat them (lap or grind) as well as if they will be replaceing the guides. Also see if they are gonna use new valves and test them for being true as well as cracks. If they want more to do these things I would get a set of remanned. I got mine from clearwater heads and they are totally redone. About $285 per head plus shipping. They have a great warranty as well.
Ill ask them when I get to that point, Did you have to send cores to that place? If I need new ones Ill see if these guys over here will match Clearwaters price
We have a UPS store uptown so that wouldnt be a problem.Much easier to have them deliverd than going to Pensacola anyway,Theres to many thugs over there, 3 murders in the last 4 days over there,,,,Ill stay out here in the sticks!!!!!!
