intermittent egr code

I get a p0401 code every once in a while, I usually pull the egr out & clean it then clear the code. I've also been watching IAT & IAT2 temps.
with a 30 to 40* diff.
So last night I get the same code & cel, no cleaning this time just reset cause the valve hasn not been gunked up.
Today I run across town & IAT is 95* IAT2 is 97*
so I do my errands & hit the freeway for some high speed runs,
now IAT is 100 & IAT2 is 140.
is there a way to test the IAT sensors or should I be looking at something
else?

recent work has been oil/egr cooler /hpop/injector
recent oil change w/mobil 1, 5-40syn.
also running b5 bio (all in the last 3500 miles)

Have you pulled IAT-2 and cleaned that? If your valve gets gunked up, that sensor is too. Something to try.

Where is the IAT and IAT2 sensor and what does it do?

And what is good to clean the IAT-2 with? And is there anything in or on the sensor that needs to be protected while cleaning, like those little holes on the EGR valve?

IAT #1 is built into the MAF sensor, as it pretty much has been on most Ford products beginning in and around 2003 model years.

IAT #2 is located in the intake manifold on the runner that services bank #2 cylinders.
