I'll be hooking up my BD coolant filter kit with the ball valves.
Anyone done the coolant flush (VC-9 etc) and just closed the ball valves? Or have you sacraficed a filter so you can flush the coolant filter branch lines?
I've thought about getting a cap to screw onto the threads where the filter goes .. then I can leave the ball valves open & get complete cleaning and flushing of the entire system.
I'm not sure what VC-9 will do to a filter. If you do the VC-9 flush through the filter, let us know how it went though. I closed my valves off during the flush.
I think I'll try and figure out what the threads are where the filter screws on. Then I'll get a screw-on cap like the one in the picture. These I've found ranging from $0.50 to $2.00 so not too bad.
That should allow me to leave the valves open and run the flush without a filter in place.
I'll post a size of fitting when I find it.
Or if anyone out there knows what it might be I'd appreciate it.
As far as I know nothing at all. My truck was at the dealership for headgaskets under warranty. When I got my bill I noticed they used something called VC-9. At the time I had no idea what it was so I googled it and soon found out what it was and what it does for the cooling system.
I thought that since there was a chance that VC-9 could have broke free some rust/deposits in the cooling system and would have hopefully been caught by the filter that I should change it. Anyways I changed the filter and cut it open and that filter looked like all the other ones I have cut open.
I had to do one a few weeks ago at the shop. I removed the filter and took the 2 lines off the ball valves and hooked them together to make a complet loop. I did not need the filter to come apart (dont know the effects of vc9 on them) so I just by passed it all together and then replaced the filter with the same wix part number that was on the old one.
seemed to me to be both the simplist and safist method to perform the function.

Excellent Idea, There is enough hose to do that. Will file this one for the future.

I did my flush through the filter but i was out to remove oil from my coolant(after a cracked cooler), not sand. I used dawn dishwashing liquid instead of vc-9, worked like a dream. The first flush i did was with the valves off and i got a lot of gunk stuck behind the closed valve so the next flush was through the filter and i just changed it when i was done. The good part about my set-up is that the filters are readily available at napa for about 12 bucks. I think cheezit is on to the right idea if your worried about your filter. Also i ended up having to flush mine 8 times, so i used a filter that attatches to the end of a water hose and filled that way, 144 gallons of distilled water just didnt seem like it would be easy to carry.
