HPOP Fitting should I replace

I am getting ready in the next week or so to replace the oil cooler, EGR cooler, and upgrade the turbo supply and drain on my 2006, but should I do the HPOP fitting? I mean if it isnt a problem now will it become one? I have 113K and this is the first set of coolers and everything else has been pretty reliable. I know the HPOP is the life of these 6.0's so I dont like fooling with it if its not 100% necessary. Is the old saying if it isnt broke dont mess with it, a bad thing in this case?
Thanks for any and all opinions.

Do you know if it's ever been replaced before? IMHO if I was going to be that far down into it already I would replace it especially if money isn't an issue. I don't think they cost that much anyway and it's not that much more to disassemble. You might get in there and find out it's already been done??

I keep hearing about the 05+ having the HPOP fitting problem, does the 03-04 engine have the same problem/design?

NO. The 03/04's have a different pump and a differently designed HPO system than the 05/6/7's. The earlier models are more prone to pump failures than the later models but the later models had some design issues with the connection to the pump. The later pumps are basically "bulletproof".

I am in the middle of an EGR delete and waiting to get my Int. Man. cleaned. I have done the oil cooler rebld. But after reading the above posts should I be doing something with my HPOP while I am in here. I have an '04' Ex. with an '03' motor with 59,000 miles on it.
Thanks for any advice here.

If you order part number 3C3Z-9G805-AA, you would get a high pressure oil pump top cover with a new IPR valve installed in it, for LESS than the price of the IPR valve by itself. The more important reason for replacing this part would be the updated machined groove on the under side of the cover, that prevents the discharge tube from contacting it, and eventually rubbing through it, thus creating a high pressure oil system leak.

I looked at the later version of the HPOP cover but having an early model, 03, would the new cover have the port for the ICP sensor/valve in addition to the IPR snensr/valve? Or would the replacement for the 03 model have the groves that you were talking about?

I'm not sure I understand the question fully. I know the part number I posted would have the machined groove on the underside of the cover. Now, on an '04 model year, I can't say due to the fact I've never had one off yet.

The early builds, '03', year and some early '04' years, have the IPR sensor and the ICP sensor in the HPOP cover. What does the groove look like and where would it be so I will know what to look for in the new cover.
Thanks.

I am in the exact same boat as 04scurs.

I have an 05 with 109,000 miles and just finished rebuilding the oil cooler. I ordered the HPOP kit ($39 from BPD) and I'm hoping to find some instructions on how to do it. Given that I have an '05, should I press forward with this change? Like the OP, it's not broken, but should I fix it?

Thanks.

Thanks.
From the under side of the cover (the side where the HPOP discharge tube connects to), the replacement covers have a machined channel that contours the curvature of the tube, whereas the original covers didn't. This would make it all the more likely for the discharge tube to rub through from contact with the cover.

Yes, you definitely should install the update one-piece branch tube connector on your '05. However, on yours you will need to remove the IPR valve first (which requires the IPR valve socket or a fabricated socket with a groove cut out) before you can remove the HPOP cover. Installation instructions come with the kit, which should be very straightforward.

I have ordered the HPOP cover kit referenced by m-chan68 and the parts guy at ford says there are two ports for both the Ipr and the ICP sensors so it should work on my
'03'. What is the BPD kit that mudhengib is referecing and do I need it too? Also what is the situation with the branch tube? I guess I just want know if all I need to do is put on the kit referenced by m-chan68 above or do I need to do more with the HPOP.
Thanks again for any help.
