Hey guys, Im new here and I am kind of stumped. i have a 1991 f-450 super duty box truck. It has the e4od trans and will not take off in 1st gear. i have to manually shift everytime I take off also. Once in a great while it will go from second into what seems like neutral. when this happens I suddenly have 1st gear back as long as this is happening. but I still have to manually shift everytime. I just changed the trans filter and and the mlps unit. I had very high hopes that changing the mlps would solve the problem but it didnt change anything. I have tried to search the forums but havent found another with the same problems.
Not an expert but I think I would check for trouble codes.
Do the tach and speedo both work properly? When you fitted the new MLPS did you align the marks before tightening the bolts?
even if you don`t have a tach on the dash I would think there is a tach sensor for the E4OD. It is like a big hex nut with two wires to it on the housing beside the engine oil filler cap. Make sure that the wires are good at the sensor and that the plug is clean and tight.
It is unlikely that Autozone would be able to read the codes but you could try.
You would need an OBD1 code reader (can be got for under $30.00) or it may be possible to read them using the self test method.
Alternatively a decent trans shop should be able to read them.
However check the tach sensor first.
last time i checked autozone's website they do carry the OBD1 tester, but from what i can tell it aint no better than just running a self test yourself, and the self test is free versus the 30... i know that everyone recommends a different brand but i dont remember what it is, anyways if you dont know how to run a self test then just follow the link for a full description
Ok, I just had a chance to check for the plugs involved in testing and Im pretty sure I found them but the 6 pin plug only has 2 wires going to it and the sti plug doesnt have a insulated end. I did try to ground out the sti plu and do the test but nothing happened. I tried to include a pic but apparently Im too stupid to figure it out.
A problem may be that, with yours being a diesel, you may not have a malfunction indicator light (MIL). So if you look again at the link for the self test you could put a small test light in the circuit or a meter to get the codes.
Make sure your TECA Power relay clicks when the key is turned on and has power on the Yellow wire going to it.
Also the Red wire has power on it leaving the TECA Power relay with the key on.
Note on a diesel 7.3 the throttle pedal must be fully depressed (WOT) for the entire KOEO test.
The KOEO test provides both "hard" DTC (present at the time of testing) and Continuous Memory codes. Always service the "hard" DTC first. These are displayed first on the tester.
