E4od stuck in drive

Hi All

Driving home the other day truck was acting slugish.
I realized I was stuck in Drive, truck would not go in
1st or 2nd. I stopped at a store to check fluid looked
a little low so I added a quart.

I put it in reverse and it would not move. Will not move in
1 or 2 either I could not even get it in neutral to roll.

I pulled codes

KOEO

current codes clean
Stored codes MLPS out of range, VSS out of range

I unplugged the MLPS when I was stuck at the store, to see
if I could get it to shift to neutral.

VSS is not expensive but would it keep trans from shifting?

KOER

unable to maintain high rpm during self test.

Other background info.

Last month I was having issues with the trans slamming into gear
between 1-2,2-3. Codes indicated TPS and MLPS, so both were
replaced and problem went away.

Yea it can cause shifting problems, it and the PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module)

Haven't heard of one causing problems to that extreme yet but.

Before this last issue how did your speedo work? Rock steady needle? Needle didn't move? Needle bounced around?

VSS was only 18.00 so I picked one up.
Also read some threads about bad or loose filter
causing low presure problems so I picked up
a filter and fluid as well.

I change fluid regularly but will try these things tomorrow to double check.

Let me be more specific.

Bought truck used in 2004, did fluid and filter change at 80,000
(don't know previous history) also installed pan with drain plug.

truck has 150,000 now and I have changed fluid 3 times since 80,000 service. (drain the pan and TC get about 12 of the 16 quarts out and replace.)

I will disconect battery tonight, to clear codes, install VSS, Filter and fluid tomorrow reconect battery try to test drive and pull codes again.

I am doubtfull this will make any difference but it is all I got untill I get more feed back from you all or pay someone to look at it..

Thanks for looking and I appreciate any and all input.

Yea so was the one in my 94, had a rock steady needle but the PSOM was the problem.
A jumpy bouncy needle can be a early sign its dead or going to die. Shifting problems soon follow if not right away.

Ok, I dropped the pan.

I would say the presence of roller bearings and metal
shavings in the pan would indicate mechanical failure.

I've seen rebuilt units with 36 month waranty on the internet for as low
as $999.00 And I seen posts were people spent $2500.00 for a rebuild.

What is a fair price for rebuild job?

If I put a new, used, or rebuilt in does it take any special tech
skills or can you just remove and replace?

I was talking to a friend this afternoon and he had the same problem. He had been pulling a heavy load and the trans stuck in high. The next day he pulled out onto the road in front of his house and put the transmission in reverse then as he was going backwards dropped it into low. It went into low and has been working ever since. He figured he didn't have anything to loose and why not. This was a c6 behind a 6.9 Diesel. Personally I wouldn't advise this, but if you feel in the mood, have at it

what about getting a tranny from a junk yard? I've been having some transmission problems and thought that if it came down to a rebuild, I'd consider a replacement.

Ok, I'm looking at trying to get a used one but having trouble finding
one from a 4.9, can I use one from another engine? 5.0 5.8 ?

Are there codes/model #s to check to tell me I'm getting the right
one from a salvage yard?

Thanks

Provided it is from a two wheel drive,
one from a 5.0 or 5.8 will fit. One from a 460 or a diesel will not fit.
As was pointed out in another thread early trucks used a cable driven speedo while the later ones had the electronic drive speedo so you may have problems with an early E4OD getting a speedo working.

I have the electric speedo so if I get an older model
I can just cap of the hole for the cable right?

I've read the 95 and up are improved. should I look for
a newer one or does that cause a new set of problems?

Do I need to stay with one from a F150 or can I use 1 from
a 250, 350 ?

My ID tag says

F2UP-DC
PRA-DA13
00216972
BD-4D22

Do I need to match the model or part # exactly?

Sorry if I'm making too much of this but I need to
get this fixed on the cheep side. My wife has been out
of work for over a year and wouldn't you know, right when
she finds a part time job and the my truck goes down and
we a stuck with only one car. I've found some inexpensive
used trannys but not here in town. I'll have to borrow a truck
to go get one and I don't want to get something that won't
work when I get home with it.

Thanks for all the help.

Ok I got a used tranny I put it in with my original TC took it for a test drive
and have bad vibration, mostly when stopped and in gear, like a stop light.

What went wrong?

Did I get a bad tranny?

Is my TC bad?

Did I do it wrong?

Option D all of the above.

Please help,

Thanks

With engine running, transmission in Drive and truck stopped the only part of the transmission that is rotating is the front pump so it is likely that the trans is good.
My guess would be a cracked flex-plate (flywheel), loose flex-plate to converter bolts or bad torque converter.
Hopefully some of the experts will give an opinion.

follow up coment?

I really need the help, this is my daily driver and I have had to borrow a
car and I have done that for too long.

I need to resolve this this week.
