Up to now, I used Dad's grease gun and whatever grease was in it.
Dad moved, so I can't do that anymore. I've purchased a decent looking Lincoln Industrial grease gun. I need to know what the best grease is. I'd prefer to use the 14.5 ounce cartridges.
I mainly grease the two or three fittings on the tie rod ends, and the front 4x4 U-Joints.
Can anyone recommend the best grease, and tell me where I can get it? I live in the middle of nowhere, so short of just buying whatever generic grease the one parts store has, I'm going to have to do mail order.
I do a fair bit of off-road, but it's mostly dusty conditions. There isn't much water to get into around here. I also do tow heavy occasionally. But the only greasable items are the tie rod ends and the 4x4 u-joints, neither of which should be effected by towing.
I suppose at some point I'll need to take apart the rear driveline slip-joint and grease it, but I can get more specific with what grease I need to do that with then.
Synthetic NGLI-2 high temp / high pressure grease. Wal-mart has it in their SuperTech line for pretty cheap, or you can get Mobil 1 at most auto-parts stores.

Mobil1 is what I was going to suggest...you can get it at Autozone for about 5.99 or 6.99 a tube, but it's some great stuff. I used it on my ball joints, tie rods, and anything else that had a nipple on it and it works great!
Not sure, the one at the Amazon link is NLGI-2, which is what you want. The other may be lower rated (lower temp and pressure) stuff. NGLI-2 is high pressure for ball joints, wheel bearings, etc. Cheaper stuff is for tie-rod ends and other lower pressure applications, but NGLI-2 can be used for it all. Just be sure it says NGLI-2 in the ratings on the back of the tube and it is synthetic. I think most of the NGLI-2 hi-temp good stuff is red colored as well.
All these are fine recommendations. All modern greases are pretty darned good.
My personal preference for a single all around grease is Redline Moly, which I order through Summit Racing. It's a synthetic (VERY temp stable - not too thick when cold but handles a lot of heat without going liquid), contains some moly (good for extreme loading), and is very water resistant. Pretty much does it all... Trailer bearings, truck bearings, motorcycles, everything. And it's red when fresh so you can see how dirty it is getting.
It's rated to 500 degrees, water proof (how they can claim it I don't understand, even submarines leak.) so on and so fourth. A shop down the street from where I worked did a lot superduties and they used a good bit of this grease.
