I have a squeal in my front end when sharply turning so im going to start by just greasing any zerks i can find. My uncles 2004 has a few in the front so im assuming i will have them too. what is the best grease to use? i forget what i have in my grease gun now, i know its in a purple container and is trucking grade.
also, if the grease doesnt help, what do you think a loud squeal would be caused by? 47k miles
Don't be surprised if you don't find any zerks at all. Ford didn't use any, except possibly in the front 4WD U-joints, and probably not even there on an '04. I use Mobil 1 synthetic WB grease in my U-joints.
Depending on what kind of squeal you have, it could be your ball joints hollerin' at ya. That's what my squeal was. When moving slowly or stopped, one of them would squeal at me while turning the steering wheel. It wasn't noticeable while driving though.
On my '04 there were no zerks on the u-joints or the ball joints (of course) but there were some zerks in the steering linkage.
Could bre many things. If your turing hard enough to hit the bump stops and keep trying to turn the wheel more against the bump stops your PS could be squealing. Ball joints could be dry, spring bushings could be dry and etc and etc.
If memory serves me right you should have 5 grease fitting on that year truck, all up front around the steering components. If a PO installed greasable ball joints there are another 4 fittings to put grease into. For grease I use a lithium complex EP wheel bearing grease with high water protection. I use it on all my trailer wheel bearings also. Pretty sure Ford recommends a moly grease but I never cared for Moly grease.
there are 4 or 5 zerks under the front end in an 03. I would grease them and if that doesn't help I am not sure where to lead ya then. As far as grease I suppose any brand would do but I always run Cenpeco.
