Need help with 2000 F250 AC problem

Have a 2000 F250 SD 7.3.

This started the end of last summer and now that summer is here, I am needing to fix it.

When I start it up cold. The AC works fine for a while. Then after the engine heats up it starts blowing warm at slower speeds. I will get on the freeway at higher speeds and it will cool fine. I get off the freeway and slow down in city traffic and it begins blowing warm. It seems to blow cold a bit after I accelerate and get the RPMs up from a stop, but if I dont get to about 60-65 mph, it starts blowing warm again.

I think this is a problem with the condenser fan in light duty trucks and cars but I have been told the SDs dont have a condenser fan.

Ive researched this for a month now with no help. A buddy of mine with a little AC experience put about 3/4 can of R134 in it and it did nothing. A couple of weeks later he put his guages on it and played with it a little and it seemed to improve greatly for a couple of days. But then went back to normal. I asked him what he did and he didnt know and was surprised it had improved....lol.

Thanks in advance......Any help is greatly appreciated.

The clutch air gap may need resetting

Thanks for responding....

Is that something I can do myself or do I need to take it in for that? My mechanic skills are fairly basic. Changed a few alternators, starters, water pumps, tie rods, belts, hoses, etc. You know ....the screw off/ screw on type stuff. Never tackled any AC problems......

One poster said to wiggle the wire/connection next to the compressor. Did that. Compressor did not kick on. Another said to tap the front of the clutch with engine running and AC on. Did that and the compressor kicked on (I heard a distinct click) and hoses immediately began to get cold and condense and air inside cab became colder.

So I guess this means the "clutch air gap" needs to be reset?

You are correct
It's not a bad job at all.just remove bolt in center of clutch hub and slide the plat off.the shims will be behind the clutch plate

Remove the 8mm bolt in the center of the clutch. Pull off the clutch, look in the hole and remove the little washer/spacer. Then re-install the clutch with a little blue lock tight on the bolt and enjoy the cold air.

Guys, I had the same problem. Changed the a/c clutch switch, checked freon level, and checked out the fuses, diodes, and relays. Nothing worked. After reading this thread, decided to try removing the air gap shim. So far the compressor clutch is working and air is good and cold. Thanks for all the info.
