I forgot you rednecks run your trucks WAAAAY too high over there. But yes, that is how I will be doing the hitch on Muttly (the crew cab).
If you thing it's way too high then do something like this...
l[ ]l
l======l
Meaning - the "l"s are a vertical plate (I couldn't get them to stack perfectly on the right side) that bolts to the outside of the frame. The "["s are the frame rails on either side and the "="s are the tube across.
The receiver is then below the frame. If you are worried about strength - tie diagonals from the center, just above the hitch receiver to the inside of each frame rail. It can still be bolt on...
*edit* d'oh - the board program removed the space between my "frame rails" - the top line of my drawing should be spaced out as far as the bottom line.
I guess with the weight of the bed and a tank of fuel it might be ok. Not real confident of butt welding plates to the tube for the hitch if i put it inside the rails.
Its not that i cant. Ive had alot of people tell me my welds are fine. I guess its just the thought in the back of my mind of what would happen if something breaks loose.
You know the flaming bus full of nuns and preschools theory.
