Bump Highboy Hitch?

Howdy everyone,
I'm looking to install a hitch reciever on my 71 highboy, seems all the previous threads (at least what I could find) are about dents. If my memory serves me, don't the 73-77 highboys have the same frame width as the 67-72 highboys? If this is correct, a hitch listed to fit a 73 highboy should fit mine? I'd like a class V, if anyone has input as to what they are using or find a problem with my above logic, your opinion is greatly valued!

You are correct about the 73 having the same frame width.

Depends on which Dent you're talking about.
73/79 F100/350 styleside with wide frame approx 37 1/2" between frame rails.
73/79 F250/350 styleside with narrow frame approx 33 1/2" between frame rails.

I'm referring to the narrow frame dents, I called one hitch manufacturer's tech line to get clarification because their site said a particular hitch fit all f-series from 71-77 but I kinda doubted it because as JEFFFAFA points out there are two sizes. The listed hitch was for the 37in, they looked up one that would fit the narrow frame and it is listed for the crew cab. The mounting holes are 31" and 1/4" on center which should fit my frame. Before I pull the trigger, anyone see a reason why it might not work or have a particular hitch that works?

I'm still thinking wether or not i want to add a receiver to my f100. I know if I had one I would use it, but I'm very particular about how I would want it to fit. A step bumper hitch would be nice, but I don't want to over stress the bumper. I'll probably end up building my own.

Mike, I know in 73 the 2wd trucks frame was widened 4in behind the rear cab mounts. The 4wd is what you are referring to I believe. Hi-boy is a street name for lifted or jacked up 4wd trucks. I was thinking it was the dents that the term was started for, but being it is a street name can apply to others.

Hey it's easy to grab a tape measure and measure the width of your rails and purchase one to fit. Class Vs will be a little harder to come by because not as many are used. IIIs will be most plentiful, & less IVs. I have a IV mounted on my 66 and tow what I want.

A step bumper built extra strong would be a cool project, you'll have to post it if you go that route! I think that option wouldn't work for my truck because it rides too high (that plus I don't trust my fab skills!).

John, I think you're right. No manufacturer lists a hitch (above a class III) for the bump sides that I can find. I'll just have to go by measurements, found a class IV that could work based on that.

I wish the '77 Highboy was in the driveway right now. I'd be able to just go out and tell you what hitch is on it. It's a Curt, that's all I know.

What Jeff is referencing is that 73-77 F-250 4wd's have the 33 1/2" frame width. Everything else 73-79 2wd and 4wd 77.5-79 F-250/79 F-350 4wd is the wide frame 37 1/2".

Yeah, the one I'll prob end up ordering is a Curt 14082. I talked to them and they seem to have pretty good customer service. I'll post on this thread whatever it is that I find works for other's reference.

I think that 14082 is what I have. Good hitch. Does its job. Tucks in nicely. I like it.

I had the hitch put on my 66 before the new exhaust system because I wanted 3" tips and wanted them to not hit the hitch. I went to a local Leonerd dealer that I knew and asked about a fit. He sez back it rat there, laid some materials on the ground got down with a tape measure, disappeared for a few and came back with a Class 4, checked the fit, told me the price, I accepted, he installed it and it's still right where he put it.

I have noticed that many hitches have slots rather than holes for more fit.

I was yarding a short while back for some parts and noticed there are a lot of hitches undamaged on trucks there. Might save a few bucks at one.

Thanks for the input about Curt, think I'm sold on it.

That's a good idea to do the hitch before installing new exhaust, thanks John.

Update
So I bought the Curt 14082 and it fits perfect! Trozei is right, it tucks in very nicely there is only 1/4" between the receiver and bumper. I'll post pics when I get a chance. Thanks for all the input.
