I figured the frames might be different. Plus he has a factory bumper, mine has an aftermarket one that I know hangs a little lower. I did see a receiver online for a "deep drop" bumper, but I don't know if that is for the bumpers that hang really low or for one like mine. I have a ball on my bumper, but I was unsure of how much I could pull with it. The frame for the bumper looks pretty sturdy compared to the factory one for my body style.
The bumper ought to have a hitch rating on it somewhere (unless it was a sticker that fell off over the years). From what I've seen most are rated at 3500 lbs, with 5000 lbs not being that uncommon.

I'm not really sure on mine. The rating isn't stamped anywhere so it must have been a sticker. I'm guessing it can hold a little more than the standard factory bumper.
My truck has an after-market Hercules bumper which is very much heavier duty than the stock bumper, but I still opted to put a real hitch on the truck. It's gives you greater flexibility for hitch height and just handles the load better.
I'm pretty sure that the frame width is different for the '97+ trucks vs. the earlier ones, and so the hitches are different as well.
my truck has a 9000 pound luverne aftermarket chrome bumper, pulled a tiny little stump and bent it like a red hot piece of iron they are not as strong as you would think, i dont trust them
The max trailer weight rating of a hitch is way more than the force you can put on the hitch doing something like pulling out a stump. A 9000 pound trailer has most of that weight on it's own tires. Toungue weight should be around 10% - 15% of the total trailer weight (and hitches will also be rated for max toungue weight). And the fore/aft forces on the hitch won't be anywhere near the full weight of the trailer either, you don't accellerate or brake with 1 g!
