Hi I'm installing new wiring in my 48. I've taken out the manual heat gauge and am going to install the stock temp. sending units. I have 5 sets I can use. How do I check them out to make sure they working right so I'll only have to do it once.? Dean
If you have a V8, there are two different types that go on your engine - one is a variable sender and one is an overheat sensor. Get a multi meter and check the resistance from the connect point and the base by putting the sensor in some hot water then removing it. Resistance should change (it should increase with heat) on the variable sender. For the overheat sensor, do the same thing. When the sensor is cold (or any temp below boiling) you should have continuity between the wire stud and housing. If you put it in boining water, the continuety should break - it should just "click" off.
Here's a write up on the two:
For a simple test, hook a gauge that you know is good to the sender, then ground the sender body. Hook power up to the other gauge stud and watch for the needle to drop. Light a match about an inch under the sender sensor for about 3-5 seconds and see if the gauge moves toward hot. If it does, it's ok.
